I took several steps backwards. They called him Boston, which meant they knew him from the gym. If my father had somehow found out about me and Angelo and these men were here on a fishing expedition, then Angelo would be in more trouble if I showed myself.

The best thing then was for me to hide so they wouldn’t find me.

I turned around and was about to do just that when I heard something else. “Our instructions were to bring you along with her, alive, but if we don’t find her here then we are meant to blow your head off and bring it back.”

"God-fucking-dammit, Boston!” another roared. “How could you do this? I knew you had guts, but the boss’s fucking daughter. Did you lose your damn mind?”

“She’s not here,” Angelo said calmly.

Angelo’s voice sent chills down my spine and I began to panic.

“Well then, it’s a bullet through the head.”

I sprinted towards the living room without a second thought. “Wait!” I screamed and walked in to see a gun held to the back of Angelo’s head.

There were two other heavily armed men present. One seated on the sofa, a sawn-off shotgun in his hand, while another was leaning against the wall with a dark scowl on his face and his hands clutching an automatic against his chest.

All the men turned at my entrance. I could see the disappointment and anger on Angelo’s face.

“What the hell are you doing?” he roared at me.

For a moment, everyone in the room was startled. It was most certain that none of us had ever heard his tone rise to such a pitch.

“Get out of here,” he roared. “Right now!”

I couldn’t leave. I stood frozen staring at the gun held so close to his head. Maybe he could take them. It was clear he thought he could, but I couldn’t take the chance.

The man leaning against the wall straightened and began to point his gun in the air. “Look, we don’t want to hurt anybody. Nobody needs to get hurt,” he said. “Your father gave us instructions to bring you home. Please don’t make things difficult for us.”

I took a step towards Angelo and one of the guns suddenly went off. I screamed at the deafening blast and dropped to my knees, my hands going to my ears. Then I looked up and saw with horror that Angelo had been hit. He was crouched on the ground and blood was pouring out of his arm.

Enraged, I jumped to my feet, and fired the gun at the man who had pulled the trigger on him.

He was lucky. I was out of practice and the bullet lodged in the wall.

Wild curses rang out as the men scurried for cover away from me. I was just about to fire another shot when the gorilla who’d been behind Angelo pointed the gun at his head. His tone and the look in his eyes made my blood curl.

“If you dare fire another shot, I will put a bullet through his head. He has only been shot through his arm, but if you push our hand, he will be dead in a second.”

“Sienna,” Angelo called, the strain in his tone heartbreaking as he held his hand to the wound. “Put the gun down, I’ll be fine.”

I didn’t believe him. “No you won’t,” I said. “They’re going to kill you.”

“Put it down!”

“No!” I refused.

“Look, please just calm down,” the man who had been silent until now spoke up. “We’re not here to harm anyone. Please don’t let this get more complicated than it already is.”

I turned the gun and pointed it directly on my head.

“Sienna!” Angelo roared.

“What the fuck!” one of the men exclaimed.

“If you hurt him,” I said, “then consider yourself dead too. I’ll pull this trigger and I don’t need to tell you how dearly my father will make you pay for it. I’m prepared to die, are you? Throw your guns on the floor and move the fuck away from him. Right now.”

They looked at each other, then dropped their guns to the floor.

“Put your hands up where I can see them and get into the bedroom,” I said.

Nobody moved.

Angelo was staring at me, part admiration, part fury, part astonishment.

“Get into the bedroom before I splatter my brains all over these walls!” I screamed, my voice sounding satisfyingly hysterical.

The three men shuffled towards the bedroom, their hands held in the air.

-Don’t you worry child-

I couldn’t believe her. She had held a gun to her own head. The risk she had taken against herself made me want to explode.

I’d watched her lock the men in my bedroom and then run to me. “Get to the car. Get to the car,” she screamed in a panic.

It was a mess. If only she’d stayed in the bedroom, I’d have dealt with it in a completely different way. I followed her out to the car. Now, I needed a different plan. “Drive to your father’s house,” I said.
