I was intrigued and listened intently as he gave me the background of the company. Even before he'd uttered the name of the company, I felt a sense of excitement. My blood pumped faster through my veins as enthusiasm filled me. Whenever I had this reaction over a potential deal, I knew not to pass it up.
We hashed it out for another hour, brainstorming ways in which we could get the company out of trouble. We had somebody in mind already. Recruitment would be expensive; i.e. luring him away from the current company where he was working. But he'd be well worth it—Jed Burner was a machine, a ruthless machine who knew exactly how to trim the fat off ailing companies.
I agreed in principle that we’d make a bid for the company after our team dug some more to verify Chris's information. I also undertook to get in contact with Jed Burner and get him on board so we’d have all our chips in place. Jed would be the hardest bit of the puzzle, but I had a good relationship with him and had worked on a deal with him once. We both respected each other.
I called Lillian and asked her to update my diary for Friday. Get a meeting with him. I would be flying to North Carolina to meet him.
Chris threaded his fingers through his hair and shifted in his chair as if all of a sudden, he couldn't find a comfortable position. Whatever it was that was on his mind was making him incredibly uncomfortable.
"Spit it out," I advised.
He grinned sheepishly. "It's about Jennifer. " He exhaled before continuing. "She’s pregnant so we decided on a shotgun wedding, and well, I guess I want you to be my best man."
Whoa! Jennifer was pregnant and Chris was getting married. To be honest, I was shocked. Chris had always been the most commitment-phobic guy I knew. He’d always voiced very strong opinions against marriage or tying himself to one person for life.
I cocked my head to one side. "So… you’re in love with her or just doing this for the baby?"
His face lit up. "Nah man, the baby’s just the icing on the cake. I’ve always wanted to marry her. She's special. I know I'll never find anyone else like her again.” He shook his head. “Sometimes I feel so stupid when I remember all the stuff I said about marriage, but I’ve seen the light. And it’s a bright shining light. I’m actually eager to tie the knot. Shocking, I know, but I can't wait to make her mine."
A strange and totally unfamiliar feeling of envy came over me. I’d never envied anyone before. I didn’t understand why I should feel that way. I certainly didn't want to be married. Maybe, I just admired the unshakeable conviction Chris had - that Jennifer was the woman for him.
I’d never met a woman I’d ever thought that way about. My mind shot to Lillian, but I quickly shook the illogical thought off. I knew nothing about her. She was a complete stranger - well, not so strange considering how greedily I sucked her off - but sex was no indicator. No one knew that better than me. Still, I found myself wanting to push her buttons further. She was intriguing.
"So, will you do it?" Chris asked.
"Of course, I will. In fact, I'd be offended if you asked anyone else." I meant it. Chris was the one person who had been a constant in my life. He was almost like a brother to me.
I stood up to shake his hand. "Congratulations! I'm so proud of you. At least one of us is going down the traditional route."
Chris stood up and grabbed my hand. "Thanks, Max," he said. “You’ll find your special person too. Just takes time and patience.”
I highly doubted that, but I didn’t bother contradicting him. "When's the wedding?"
"We want something very small and intimate, something that won't take months to plan. So, we're thinking about a month from now."
"What will your mother have to say about that?" I mocked. While Chris's mother and mine hadn't ever hit it off, they did have one thing in common: they both wanted us to get married in lavish style and give them grandchildren.
Chris shrugged. "She’ll just have to go along with it. What matters is what Jennifer and I want."
Chris left shortly after and I followed him out. There was an excitement inside me that I hadn't had in a long time as I stepped out of my office into Lillian’s space.
It was half after five, well past her official leaving time, but she was still at her desk. She stood when she saw us and picked up her purse. But when she met my gaze, her cheeks turned a rosy shade of pink. I knew exactly what was on her mind; she was remembering the way I’d buried my head in her sweet pussy and eaten her out like a starving man. Something I was desperate to do again… and again. It was risky business, but every lick and kiss was fucking worth it.
