“It’s a long and embarrassing story.” She sighs and tugs the blanket tighter around her curvy body. “Why didn’t anyone else get out of the fire truck?” She glances over my shoulder at the three other men sitting in the rig.

“This was a one-man job.” And I’m the only man who will be saving my gorgeous naked mate. “I really need your version for my report.” That’s a little fib. Yes, the department requests that we make detailed reports, but they make exceptions for small jobs.

My mate blows out her breath. “Darn.” She steps back from me, and my bear protests under my skin, missing her closeness. “Can I at least throw on some clothes before I explain?”

My bear growls in my mind, I prefer you naked, but I ignore the fucker and let my human side respond. “Sure.” I walk with her over to her small two-story house. When she trips over the long blanket, I kneel in front of her, gather the bottom, and fold it up.

“Thank you.” She smiles and reaches a hand through the opening to grasp the folded bottom against her chest. My mate looks like a curvy little minx cuddled up in the gray wool blanket. The stubborn set of her chin tells me she’s going to keep me on my toes. My eyes move over the tiny freckles running across her nose and cheeks, and I barely resist the urge to kiss the little dots. I notice a tiny scar running along her jawline and wonder what caused it. All of a sudden, I realize I don’t even know my mate’s name.

“You’re welcome,” I tell her and hold out my hand. “I’m Asher Coburn.” As we step into the dimly lit foyer, my mate slips her hand back through the blanket slit and reaches out to shake my outstretched hand. When her soft skin touches mine, I almost fucking self-combust.

“Parker Scott.”

Her name matches her perfectly, except for the last name, which I plan to fucking change as soon as possible. “Nice to meet you, Parker.”

“You too.” She smiles, and a tiny dimple appears on her right cheek. “I just wish I wasn’t sitting in a tree naked when we met.” When she gives an adorable little shudder, I fight the urge to pull her close.

“I’m not complaining.” There goes my mouth again.

Her eyes narrow and she mutters, “I bet,” under her breath before pointing at the small sofa sitting in the middle of the living room off to the right. “Have a seat while I change.”

“I’ll be here.” I watch as she slowly climbs the stairs, and my cock steadily grows harder with each step she takes. When she turns the corner, I glance out the front window and see Warrick standing next to the rig, pointing at his watch.

I unbutton my jacket and grab my phone from my inner pocket then type out a quick message for my asshole friend.

Me

She’s dressing then I’ll get her statement.

Bottomless Pit

Hurry the fuck up. You can piss on her later. I’m missing dinner.

Me

You can afford to miss a few meals.

Bottomless Pit

Fuck off, dickhead. I’m a growing boy. Now hurry up before I come in and drag your sorry ass out.

Me

There’s a protein bar in my seat pocket. Eat it and shut up.

Bottomless Pit

No there isn’t. I already found it. Now, hurry.

I should’ve known the wolf shifter would smell that bar from a mile away. Warrick eats twice the amount of the rest of us. He swears it’s because he’s a natural-born alpha, but the rest of us believe it takes a ton of calories to be such an asshole.

Me

You’re a goddamn bottomless pit. I’ll be out soon.

I text back with a middle finger emoji and sit on the sofa to wait for my mate to reappear.

CHAPTER 2

Parker

“You were a bad, bad kitty. I’m cutting out all your treats for a week.” I shake my finger at Gilbert, but my unconcerned black cat ignores my threat and continues licking his paws. “I mean it this time,” I add, but we both know I’m blowing smoke. The first time my ornery kitty rubs against my legs and gives me his I tolerate you, human meow, I’ll fold like a cheap suit.

With the way my luck has been running lately, I’m not surprised I fell out of the window buck naked trying to save my cat from certain death.

Things have been a little crazy since I moved to Honey Pot Hollow. A few months ago, I graduated from college and started looking for teaching positions. I’m not sure where the urge to accept a position teaching third grade in the shifter community came from, but I decided to run with it. I searched and found a fixer-upper on the outskirts of town and moved here before giving myself a chance to change my mind. And here I am.
