Damn, now that was a tight ass.

She mentally slapped her forehead. She shouldn’t be checking out some stranger’s ass. As he stood, she thought he looked familiar.

Did she know him?

She grabbed an overripe banana just as her gaze was caught by two people kissing.

Sheesh, they should really head over to the meat department if they wanted some tongue. She snorted at her terrible joke. Brody would have found it funny.

Then the two people drew apart and she sucked in a breath of shock. What the hell? Since when were the two of them together?

Autumn stumbled back, straight into a person behind her. They let out a small grunt and she turned, her hands in the air as she reached for the person, worried she’d pushed them off balance.

Surprise filled her as she saw who was behind her. It was Mr. Tight Butt, and it finally clicked where she knew him from.

“Gosh darn it! Mr. Summers, I’m so sorry! I didn’t stand on your foot, did I?”

The handsome man smiled back at her gently. “Of course not. Even if you did, you’re hardly likely to cause any damage. And it’s Frank, remember?”

She nodded at the real estate agent who’d sold her house to her. Sheesh, had she really been checking out his butt a few minutes ago?

“Sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going.”

“Are you all right?” he asked.

“Of course! Why wouldn’t I be? I’m the one who stood on you.”

“Actually, I was talking to the banana.”

Huh? He was talking to . . .

“Oh my God!” she said in horror. “Eww, I’ve got banana guts on me.” Bananas were not her friends. She could deal with them if she was creating something. But she didn’t like the feel of them. Or the smell.

He chuckled. “Well, I wouldn’t call it guts. Guts would be bloody.”

She gave him a look of horror as he drew a handkerchief out of his pocket. Who carried around handkerchiefs these days? She watched in surprise as he grabbed the banana, setting it into his basket. Then he took hold of her hand and gently cleaned it.

That was . . . very gentlemanly.

Even if it was a bit odd for someone she barely knew. Although his touch was nice. He held her firmly, but not too hard. And he smelled good.

Stop thinking about how good he smells.

“Thank you,” she said when he finished cleaning her up. She winced at the state of his handkerchief. “Give that to me and I’ll wash it for you.”

“You don’t have to do that,” he said, folding it up carefully.

“Please. I want to. I can drop it off at your office or house or something. Not that I’m trying to find out where you live or anything. Oh my God. I’m rambling.”

He chuckled. “It’s fine. Are you—”

“Autumn?” a deep voice interrupted Frank. She turned, staring up at Brad. Once, she’d thought he was the most handsome man she’d ever met. But now . . . his perfection was too . . . perfect. He got a spray tan every week to keep himself looking like he’d just stepped off the beach. His eyebrows were waxed, his fingernails manicured, and his suit tailored perfectly.

Everything about him was stunning. But it was intimidating. She hadn’t been able to keep up with him. She knew that she’d always been a disappointment with her terrible dress sense and her wild hair.

With Brody, she could relax. She could wear what she liked without pressure. Not that she’d worn anything other than sweatsuits and yoga pants with oversized sweaters in a long time.

Because rather than draw attention to herself, she preferred to hide in the background. Unseen. Ignored.

“Oh, uh, hi,” she said, wishing she didn’t stumble over her words.

Shit.

The guy had dumped her while she’d been in the hospital. She wished she looked all put-together and gorgeous. Instead, she was wearing clothes that were two sizes too big in a horrid gray color and no make-up. And she’d thrown her hair up in a bun.

“Autumn? What are you doing here?” Brad asked.

Well, she kind of thought that was obvious.

“Um, I, um, I’m shopping.”

Crap. Spit it out, Autumn.

“Right. I just didn’t expect you to shop here.”

What was wrong with shopping here? Wait. Did he shop here because he thought he wouldn’t run into her?

Brad ran his gaze over her. “You’re looking, well, yes, okay, I suppose.”

Okay, he supposed? Was he for real right now?

Autumn’s shoulders drooped. This was how it had always been in their relationship. He’d been the shining star. Great at anything he did. Charming and articulate.

While she’d mostly hidden in the background, crippled by shyness and the worry that she’d say or do something wrong that might embarrass him.

When she didn’t reply, Brad gave her a pitying look. Fuck, she hated when people pitied her. “Poor Autumn, you—”
