“There! Done!” She held up the piece of paper triumphantly.
“Good job, baby girl,” he said. “Come show Daddy.” He pushed his chair back and then patted his lap.
North glanced up from his laptop.
Jared raised an eyebrow in challenge. Was he going to stay or go? He knew that this wasn’t something North was interested in. That he wasn’t a Daddy or a Little. But was he okay with it? Could he show her that he was okay with this side of her?
Jared wouldn’t have him upsetting her Little.
North just turned his gaze back to his laptop.
Good.
Considering the things that North had bought for her, Jared had figured he’d be good with all of this.
Jared waited for her to walk around with her list and then he lifted her onto his knee. “Let’s take a look, baby girl. Make sure you wrote it all. Hmm. It seems like you did. Well done.”
She practically squirmed on his lap.
Their girl was praise-starved. And probably touch-starved too. He did notice how she kind of melted into his touch.
North wasn’t big on casual touch. Or any touch that wasn’t play, sex, or murder, really.
So Jared would have to make certain she got what she needed. Especially as they were supposed to be building intimacy and getting her used to touch.
He cuddled her in close. “Now, what were you punished for?”
“Pulling a knife on you,” she replied.
“And what are you not going to do again?”
“Use a weapon on you or North.”
“That’s right. Now, I have an idea. I know that North bought you some things that you haven’t worn or played with yet. How about Daddy helps you get dressed into a cute outfit and you can do some playing here in the office while I work? Would my baby girl like that?”
42
Like it?
That was a bit of an understatement.
She glanced at North, trying to judge his thoughts on the matter. But he was busy working.
“Okay.”
“Okay, what?” Jared asked firmly.
“Okay, Daddy,” she said.
“That’s my good girl.”
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” North asked.
She tensed.
“What?” Jared asked, staring over at North.
“To play in here?” North asked. “This is a work and punishment space. I just thought . . . maybe it would be better to have a play space?”
A play space?
“Really?” she breathed out. “Could I have that? I mean, I don’t have to. I don’t spend much time in Little space and I don’t need things. You guys have done so much for me. It’s fine.”
Shoot. She went from excited to anxious in the space of a minute.
She couldn’t believe North was the one to suggest it.
“I think a playroom is a good idea,” Jared said.
“That’s good, since I’ve already started arranging it. Follow me.” North got up and left the room.
Jared stood but instead of putting her on her feet, he set her on his hip.
To her shock, he carried her out of the room and up the stairs.
“Jared! You can’t carry me up the stairs.”
He stilled on the third step. “Excuse me? What do you call me?”
Oh, monkey butts.
“Daddy, you can’t carry me.”
“Why not?” he asked in a low voice.
“B-because I’m too big to be carried up the stairs.”
“You’re not big. You’re a little girl,” he told her as he started moving again. “My little girl.”
God, she loved hearing that.
North led them to what she figured had to be a cupboard. Had he put things in there for her? Or was he turning the cupboard into a play area?
But when he drew the cupboard door open, she saw a set of stairs.
“Good thinking,” Jared said to North.
“I occasionally have a good thought.”
Was he making a joke?
Hmm. It was difficult to tell with North.
“Are these secret stairs?” she asked.
“Yep,” Jared said as they started up them. “They lead to the attic.”
He stepped out into a huge area with surprisingly high ceilings in the middle, then lower ceiling where the window alcoves were.
The floors were wooden but with several big rugs. In one alcove there was a gorgeous rocking chair with a set of white drawers beside it. In another was a single bed with a white iron headboard and a lacy white bedspread.
There was another set of drawers by the bed.
Then there was a desk in a third alcove and a single chair facing the window in the last one.
“It’s obviously not finished yet,” North said. “I didn’t know if you wanted some sort of theme. What kind of toys you might like. I can move the things I purchased for you up here.”
“This is . . . this is more than enough,” she said as Jared set her down to explore.
It was then she started to see the small touches. There was a heart-shaped pink pillow on the bed and the blanket over the back of the rocking chair had small whales on it.
