I hear Pedro whistling as he comes down the stairs to give me a heads up, and I glance at my second-in-command. “Which body part do you think I should cut off?”

“You’re fucking insane!” Nolan shouts, yanking against the restraints.

“Remove his feet,” Pedro shrugs.

“Yes. We can take off the shackles then.” I look at Nolan. “You’re not going to try to slither out of here, right? Cutting off your legs takes a bit longer, and I’m pressed for time.”

He lets out a roaring shout that’s filled with a smidgeon of madness.

I pick up the axe. “Don’t lose your mind yet. It will ruin all the fun.” Using all my strength, I bring the blade of the ax down on his left ankle, and it slices through the skin before slamming into the bone.

The screams coming from Nolan have me pulling a what-the-fuck face. “Jesus, who knew you could hit such a high note?”

Pedro’s radio crackles, then we hear Marc say, “Ciara’s in the kitchen. She just asked Astrid where Santiago is. Do I say something?” Pedro quickly replies, “Santiago’s on his way.” Then he holds his hand out. “Give me the damn ax and go to your woman.”

I hand him the tool. “Both feet.”

“I know.”

As I walk toward the stairs, I glance down at my tan colored shit and mutter, “Why does blood always have to splatter all over the fucking place.”

I start to undo the buttons as I head up, and seeing Samuel having a smoke break, I ask, “Have you heard from Eladio?”

“Miguel called to say Eladio’s recovered enough because he’s driving him up the walls.”

I let out a chuckle. “Tell Miguel to suck it up. I want Eladio to take a full two-week break before he comes back.”

Samuel nods as he takes a drag, smoke billowing around his face. He drops the cigarette on the ground and steps on it before heading toward the stairs.

Just then, Nolan’s screams sound up. “Shut the door,” I call out, and I get a thumbs up from Samuel before he pulls the heavy wooden door shut, muffling the cries.

I shrug my shirt off and use it to wipe my hands clean in case I walk into Ciara before I can get to the bathroom.

Chapter 27

CIARA

Sitting in Santiago’s office, I type in the login details for my bank account. Before I can press enter, Santaigo asks, “Are you sure?”

“Unless someone changed it,” I mutter as I press the button, “it should work.” When I get into my internet banking app, I grin at him. “I’m in.”

“Does everything look okay?” he asks.

I go into my account and see a bunch of charges. The balance is higher, though. “I had twenty thousand in my account, but now it shows two hundred and thirty-six thousand.”

Santiago frowns as he comes to look at the screen. “I was under the impression your father had money.”

I point at my balance. “The inheritance was split three ways, and that’s a lot of money.”

He pulls his phone out of his pocket and keeps glancing between the laptop screen and the device in his hand, then he mutters, “That fixes it.”

“Fixes what?”

“Your bank balance.” He gestures at the laptop. “Open an investment account and transfer the bulk of your money over to it. Only keep what you need on a monthly basis in this account.” He lets out a sigh. “Fuck, we need to get you a card.”

He leans over me and gets to work, opening the other account. When he selects the option to make a transfer, I slap my hand over his wrist. “Wait! Something’s wrong with the balance.”

“Nothing’s wrong with it.” He transfers one point seven million to the investment account. “As soon as we have some free time, we’ll go to Ireland to get you a card so you can actually use the funds. In the meantime, I’ll get you a credit card on my account.”

All the typing he was doing a second ago…

I grip his arm tight. “Did you just transfer one point five million to my account?”

He glances at me. “Too little?”

“No!” I get up from the chair, staring at him wide-eyed. “Why would you give me so much money?”

He actually looks baffled as he straightens up. “Because you’re my woman.” Stepping closer to me, he takes hold of my left hand and holds it up between us. “Pretty sure that’s my ring on your finger.”

He’s being so damn cute right now, I drop the subject and say, “Thank you.”

A grin spreads over his face. “You’re welcome, mi amor.” He wraps his arms around me and tugs me closer. “The villagers are planning a party for tomorrow night to celebrate Eladio surviving his first gunshot wound and to welcome the new arrivals. After that, I have some business to take care of, then we can go to Ireland.”
