His lips are softer than I thought they’d be. He’s gentle and loving and showing me how he feels. I melt against him with a moan when I feel his tongue claiming my mouth. His palms flatten on my lower back and the heat swirling around my core slides down between my legs. My pussy throbs as I kiss him back.

My heart is pounding when we finally pull away. I look up at him in awe, unsure of what just happened, but I know it’s changed everything.

I’m his.

Everything he said—marriage, kids, a life together—I want it too.

It’s all I want.

I swallow hard as I tuck the loose strand of hair that’s been bugging me all day behind my ear. “We should… get to that kid.”

He nods but doesn’t let me go. The look in his sexy blue eyes says that he might never release me. I might just be fine with that.

I run my hand down his muscular arm and slide it into his. “Come,” I say as I squeeze it.

He releases me and we continue up the path, only now, we’re holding hands.

“There she is,” I say when I spot the girl on the path. She’s sitting on a log beside her mother with her shoe off. Her eyes are all red and puffy like she’s been crying for a while.

My heart goes out to her as we hurry over.

“Oh, thank you for coming,” the young pretty mother says. “She slipped on the ice… I think she sprained it.”

Her eyes suddenly widen and she does a double-take when she spots Owen approaching. I guess I’m not the only woman who has had that kind of reaction to him.

He kneels in front of the girl who’s about ten years old and gently takes her leg in his big hands. “It’s not broken,” he says in a deep soothing voice. “That’s the good news.”

“I tried to call my husband,” the mother says, clearly annoyed. “But he’s in his room writing and he always turns his phone off when he’s working on an article.”

“Am I going to have to walk down?” the girl asks with a wince.

“No way,” Owen says with a sly smile. “You can take the Owen escalator. Sound good?”

She nods, trying not to cry.

“What’s your name?”

“Eloise.”

“That’s a beautiful name,” Owen says as the mom and I watch with our ovaries exploding. “Do you want me to carry you down now?”

She nods and reaches for him. He gently picks her up and cradles her to his big chest.

Eloise doesn’t look nearly as upset now.

“Awww,” the mother says with a breathless look as she watches him rescue her daughter.

It’s a sight I’m going to remember for a long time.

Eloise is looking up at him with a shy smile as he carries her down. I wish I was in her place…

Wow. I’m actually jealous of a ten-year-old. I’m wondering if there’s room for me against that big hard chest if I happen to slip on the same patch of ice and twist my ankle.

Owen effortlessly carries her down the mountain while he asks her questions about school and her friends. She’s chatting with him the entire way as the mom and I struggle to keep up.

Owen is a natural out here. A true mountain man. He never seems to slip on the wet mud or on the random patches of ice. It’s like he was made to be living in the wilderness.

“Is that your boyfriend?” the mom whispers when we’re halfway down.

“No,” I say as I start to blush wildly. “What makes you ask that?”

She shrugs. “I don’t know. Just the feeling in the air. The way he looks at you.”

I swallow hard as I look at his big muscular back.

“He likes you,” she leans in and whispers. “I can tell. Go for it!”

I’m about to tell her that he’s my boss and that would be unprofessional, but I keep my mouth shut instead. Maybe she’s onto something…

Maybe I should go for it.

We arrive back at the lodge and there’s a nurse waiting to see Eloise. Tina called one, which I’m pleasantly surprised with. Maybe she isn’t so bad after all.

“Thank you so much,” the mom says as Owen carries Eloise into the spare office. The nurse is all set up to examine her.

“We’re out here if you need anything else,” Owen says as he smiles at Eloise before leaving.

“Thanks again,” the mom says before closing the door. She’s looking at me and then motions to Owen with her eyes. Her lips curl up into a big mischievous smile as she closes the door.

“I should get back to work,” I say to Owen when it’s just the two of us again. My body is humming. It’s urging me to lean against him so it can feel those big arms wrapping around it once more.
