“Which is . . . ?”

“We take things one day at a time.” My heart swells as I gaze upon the man who has brought me more love, contentment, adventure, and philosophical, late-night conversations than I knew a person could experience in one lifetime, let alone five years. “We don’t plan anything anymore, remember?”

We learned the first time that life tends to go according to its plan—not ours—and we’ve yet to be proved wrong.

“You’re quiet. What are you thinking?” I ask. A handful of times over the years, we’ve talked about what it would be like to put down roots. Together, we dreamed up different variations of the lives we might have. Lighthouse caretakers in Maine for one. Hobby farmers in Kansas in another. Once we contemplated finding a place in Malibu and taking up surfing. But in the end, the ideas were always just as fulfilling as the realities, and the thought of having to pick one broke our adventurous little hearts.

“I’m thinking the only thing I love more than that idea,” he finally answers, “is you.”

As the last rays of sunlight disappear into the deep-blue waters and the sky overhead fills with glittering stars, we toast to our future—the one we’ll continue to take a single day at a time for the rest of our married-ish lives.

THE END
