I gasp as he disappears and a large white wolf takes his place. He’s beautiful.

He’s perfect. His fur shines like freshly fallen snow.

An image of me curled up with that sleeping wolf in front of a fireplace in the middle of winter pops into my mind and it’s so inviting that I let out a contented sigh.

He looks at me with the same stunning green eyes and my breath catches in my throat. I can feel the protectiveness beaming out of him and enveloping me. I can tell he would die before he let anyone hurt me. He would protect me to the death.

“Thank you,” I whisper.

He turns away with a snarl and lunges forward at the three charging bears.

Chapter Nine

Adalynn

It’s pandemonium as all the ferocious animals collide in a bloody brawl. Colin’s rabid grizzly is taking on Jackson’s grizzly and Ryker’s Kodiak at the same time. I wince as the Kodiak gets slammed into my car, breaking two of the windows.

Meanwhile, Remy’s wolf is circling Grayson’s huge hulking polar bear. It’s not a fair fight. The polar bear is ten times his size. But my mate is faster and manages to leap out of the way of every big swipe of that white paw. The polar bear roars in frustration as Remy darts around and bites his ribs before sprinting away in a circle.

I have to help. I have to do something!

The two bears leap onto Colin’s grizzly and they try to wrestle him down, but he’s too strong. He shakes them off with a roar.

I’m desperately looking around for some way to help when I spot the garden hose. It’s not great, but it’s either that or trying to smash a garden gnome over an angry bear’s head. I grab the hose and turn it on.

“No!” I scream when I turn back around and spot my man’s wolf trapped under the enormous paw of Grayson’s polar bear.

The cruel bear opens his vicious jaws, about to sink his teeth into Remy’s neck. I pull the lever down on the hose and spray him right in the face.

The bear jerks back and Remy manages to squirm out.

“Great job, Adalynn!” Nathan shouts. I turn and spot him watching in the window upstairs.

Tires squealing on the street catch my attention and I turn around just in time to see a car peeling away. Another car arrives on the street, stops when they see the chaotic scene, backs up, and then accelerates back out the way they came.

I don’t blame them. My car is getting fucked up.

Colin’s bear charges at the grizzly and slams him into the busted-up side of my car. It lifts on two wheels and nearly tips over before crashing back down.

Shit! My car!

I start spraying the other bears, trying to give my brother and my mate an edge. It’s not doing much, but it’s distracting them for a second or two, which helps.

An old lady across the street walks onto her porch and stares at the unusual scene.

“Harry!” she calls out calmly. “I think I took too much of my medication. I’m seeing things again.”

Her elderly husband walks out and his mouth drops open. “I’m seeing them too.”

Remy’s wolf sprints beside the car. He phases back into his human form and grabs the Samurai sword on the front seat.

“That’s enough!” he shouts. “He’s a good man. He doesn’t deserve this. No feral shifter does.”

Jackson’s grizzly is limping and bleeding from his shoulder. He shakes violently and then phases too.

“It’s our job!” Jackson shouts as he looks at the deep bloody gash on his shoulder. “Someone has to take care of these nasty rabid beasts!”

“Our job is to protect,” Remy shouts as he lowers the blade. “Not kill innocent men!”

“Innocent?” Jackson says as he points at my brother’s wild bear. He’s snarling as he wrestles with the polar bear. “You call that innocent?!”

“He’s hurting!” Remy says with desperation in his eyes. “Can’t you see that, Jackson? He needs his mate. It’s killing him.”

A red car turns onto the road, but instead of accelerating away, it accelerates toward the house. It skids to a stop on the street and a pretty young woman races out. She’s wearing a waitressing uniform with her apron still on.

That’s Valerie… That’s my brother’s mate.

I can tell immediately. He hasn’t shut up about her for almost eight years. I recognize her auburn hair, her blue eyes, and her nose just like Nathan’s. She’s just like Colin described her.

“Colin?” she asks in a low voice as she stares at the rampaging grizzly. I don’t think she’s ever seen his bear, but she can still instantly tell which one he is. Even after all these years, she still knows her mate.

Colin’s grizzly immediately calms when he hears her voice and smells her scent. He stops fighting and looks at her with so much longing it brings tears to my eyes.
