“We’ll see each other again soon. I need to take care of some things first so that we don’t have to sneak out to have fun,” I pointed out as I took out my phone. There were tons of messages and missed calls, but I didn’t even bother looking at those. I would head back to the apartment after I made sure she got into the cab okay.

If they wanted to yell at me when I returned, they could do so. However, they weren’t my dad. They didn’t actually have any authority over me. So, they could shout all they wanted, and I would continue to do what I wanted because I was a grown woman and things went perfectly fine tonight.

“Yeah, I guess. Thank you,” Delilah said with a grateful smile on her face. She then grimaced and sipped on her water slowly to try to curb her nausea.

I called her a cab and walked outside with her to wait for it to pull up. The night air felt good on my exposed skin, cooling me down and helping Delilah keep from throwing up again until she got back to her hotel room.

It probably would’ve been a good idea to go to her hotel room with her so that I wasn’t out here by myself at night, but the club was only about ten feet away. Nothing bad could possibly happen to me when I was so close to a public place.

“Thank you for coming to see me. This was the best night that I had in a while,” I told her as I kept my arm around her. I didn’t want her to go, but we’d had enough fun for one night. We had the rest of our lives to make more fun memories together.

“Best night ever,” Delilah said cheekily just as the cab pulled up in front of us.

I pulled open the back door and helped her inside, bidding her goodbye before shutting the door. I watched the taxi drive off, leaving me on the sidewalk on the left side of the club by myself. Or so I thought.

Two sets of hands suddenly grabbed both of my arms from behind, yanking me back toward an alleyway. With a panicked shout, I threw my arms forward and back, trying to loosen my attackers’ grips so that I could run for my life. I might not have much of one left if they fulfilled their plan.

“Let me go!” I screamed, kicking my feet and trying to get a good look at them, but they wore black masks and hoodies to conceal themselves.

They tightened their grip on me, digging their fingertips into my skin deep enough to bruise. They started to drag me into the alleyway out of sight, making my ankles scrape the asphalt when I couldn’t get my feet under me.

“Stop! You’re hurting me!” I shouted at them as my eyes burned, tears threatening to break from them.

“Shut up, bitch!” one of them grunted before throwing me against one of the brick walls.

I hit the wall on my side, the side of my head catching the brick. I grimaced as pain shot through my body like a crack of lightning and an ache filled my head. Something warm dripped down the side of my face above my eyebrow as I sank to the ground, feeling dazed and achy.

“Shouldn’t have complained.”

I peered up at the men as they approached me, the sound of my heartbeat filling my head as they got closer and closer. The air grew thinner and harder to breathe in, and I couldn’t help but wonder if this was the end for me. I might’ve made a terrible mistake tonight.

“Please, just let me go. I won’t say anything,” I told them, feeling like I was staring death in the face as they got closer and closer. I didn’t want to die. Not without making some sort of mark on the world.

“You’re pretty when you beg,” one man said with a chuckle as he reached forward to grab the front of my dress, dragging me forward slightly. “I bet even prettier with your dress off.”

I swallowed hard as tears welled up in my eyes. I tried to lean away, but he came closer and smelled my hair, making the other guy laugh.

“Please…” I whispered as my eyes shut, preparing for the worst.

“Hey, asshole!”

My eyes snapped to the right just as Benjamin lunged at one of the men and slammed his fist against the man’s masked face. I pressed myself back against the wall as I watched the others pour into the alleyway, throwing calculated punches and making effortless dodges. They were far more experienced than whoever attacked me.

Rhett punched the man who’d thrown me in the throat, making him gasp and claw at his neck for air. With a shout, Rhett delivered a perfect roundhouse kick that sent the man right to the ground.
