And here we were, making it work, and one of the top government contractors in less than a year and a half of forming it.

Needless to say, we’d done better than any of us ever thought we would.

“Well, then this should add to your drama overload,” Donnelly drawled, then threw himself into an explanation of what had been going on lately.

“Hold up, hold up.” Hank sounded quiet, but I could hear the anger in his voice all the same. “Are you telling me that you were shot by this bitch? And you never thought to tell me?”

There was a lengthy pause on my end before I said, “You have a dying brother, Hank. I don’t want to add to your worries.”

“You also had a girl, a fuckin’ girl, move in with you?” he continued as if I’d not offered up any explanation at all. “And you didn’t think to tell me that, either?”

My eye twitched.

“I don’t know why y’all keep harping on the ‘girl living with you’ situation,” I grumbled. “I like fuckin’ girls!”

“Actually,” Hank said. “I was fairly sure that you were gay for the first half of our lives. Only when you started lookin’ really hard at that tall basketball girl, who somewhat resembled a man, when we were in training that one time, did I realize that maybe you just went for the dominant ones.”

I would’ve banged my head against the desk had it been closer.

“And not only is it a girl, but it’s that girl.”

I knew what he meant by ‘that’ girl.

Banger was that girl. That girl that I’d wanted for so long that sometimes it was hard to be around her and not reach for her.

And now that I was able to do that…

“I’m fairly sure they finally fucked, too,” Donnelly eloquently stated.

I felt my eye twitching all over again.

A common occurrence when around the two of them.

Hank hooted, luckily away from the receiver, and started to yell obscenities like ‘My boy finally fucked a girl!’

I pinched the bridge of my nose and waited, wondering where he was that he was yelling that out.

Likely the damn hospital seeing as that was where he was at half the time now.

“Would you shut the fuck up already?” I growled, knowing he’d hear.

He did.

Laughing softly, he started to sing. “Banger and Easton, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S…”

“I will fuck you up,” I snapped. “You want to help me with why I called? Or should I leave you to your MC drama?”

Hank sobered instantly. The smile wiped off Donnelly’s face.

I knew I had both of their undivided attention.

“So you put the new kid on it,” Hank said. “Are you wanting me to help?”

“Yes,” I admitted. “Kid’s currently browsing Google.”

Hank choked. “You should just let him go now before you have to do anything more to him later. Like drop him off at the train station.”

“You’ve been watching Yellowstone again, haven’t you?” I asked.

“There’s nothing else to fuckin’ do. And those Duttons are badasses,” Hank defended his television show choices.

Me, on the other hand? I hadn’t had time to watch a television show, or a movie, in what felt like forever.

“You’re living with an MC full of felons and criminals, and you think the Duttons are badasses?” Donnelley jeered.

“Well, when you put it like that…” Hank trailed off. “I have all the information on the trooper that pulled her over. A one Mark Grove. He’s friends with her on Facebook. He and she exchanged instant messages about…” He continued on, giving me Mark Grove’s entire life story in half a second. Ending with, “And Ashton is already looking for a job elsewhere. He’s in his final stage of interviews with our biggest rivals.”

I sighed, looking at Donnelly.

Donnelly gave me the ‘I’ll take care of the last part’ look, and then we said goodbye to Hank.

“Hey, how do you feel about giving me a ride to Arkansas? I have a few things to deal with and then I’m going to hitch a ride back home with Banger when she comes back through,” I asked Donnelly.

“I’m not a fuckin’ Uber,” Donnelly grumbled.

But in the end, he did give me a ride.

And I got to take care of a trooper that thought he could badger my girl without any consequences.

CHAPTER 16

Stop trying to earn your spot at a table that would allow you to starve.

-Easton to Banger

BANGER

I pulled over at the rest stop that would be my home for the night, my ass wiggling in the seat as I thought about how close I was to the bathroom.

I’d made the mistake of having not one, not two, but three Dr. Peppers on the way back to keep me awake.

It had done what I’d intended for it to do, but it’d also made my bladder so full that I was downright dancing to keep my bladder at bay when I finally came to a complete stop.
