Before I can request further information, the door closest to the curb pops open, and a woman slides inside so fast, I’ve only scooted partway across the seat, meaning a portion of her delectable ass lands on my lap.

“Oh em gee… I’m so sorry.”

I freeze as our ride-sharer wrangles a poofy dress bag into the cab, stealing the last snippet of space. Her voice is recognizable. Not only because it is breathless but also because my cock pays it as much attention as it does her grind up when she slips off my lap.

“The app said there were additional riders, but I stupidly took that as one person.” She pushes down on the bag hiding her features from my suddenly beauty-deprived eyes. “I also can’t see anything past this mountain of tulle…” The remainder of her reply traps in her throat when her eyes lock with mine over the puffed-out dress bag. “Caleb…” Jess swallows three times before muttering, “What the hell are you doing here?” Her face brightens to the color of beets before she mutters under her breath, “Damn, Heidi. I’m going to kill her. I don’t care that it is her wedding day, she needs to stop meddling in my life.” After a quick breather, she returns her eyes to mine and says matter-of-factly, “I don’t know what lie she told you, but I’ve not thought about you at all the past week, so if you’re attending her wedding today with the hope of a second round, you should get out now because you’re wasting your time.”

My lips twitch in preparation to speak, but before I can, Octavia asks, “A second round of what?”

Jess’s eyes widen to the size of saucers a mere second before they narrow into thin slits. I don’t know how she can see anything past the dress bag hogging half of the back seat of the SUV, but the harsh stomp of her foot is executed with pure perfection. The heel of her stiletto slams into my polished dress shoe with so much force, I can’t help but whimper like a child.

“Owww, what the hell was that for?”

“You’re married! I knew it. I told Heidi that’s why you left in a hurry.” She sounds more relieved than annoyed like she’d rather me be adulterous than ignorant to the connection blistering between us all night Saturday.

While continuing to babble under her breath, Jess exits the Uber as fast as she entered it. She slams the door shut then announces that the driver can go. “I’d rather find my own way to Seattle than ride with him.”

Before I can speak, much less get over my shock at her reaction, the driver pulls away from the curb, and Octavia locks her eyes with mine. “We’ve been here a week, Caleb. One measly week.”

Usually, I’d fire off a smart-ass remark about how I can’t help my appeal to the opposite sex, but the disappointment in her eyes stops me. I vowed not to be happy until she is, and our move across the country only dampened the sorrow in her eyes instead of fully eradicating it, so instead of focusing on my fuck-ups, I once again shift the focus to something else. “Did Susan say whose wedding we’re catering today?”

I hadn’t considered it could be Heidi’s. She mentioned Saturday night she was getting married next weekend, but surely there are hundreds of nuptials being held this weekend. It is prime wedding season.

When Octavia shakes her head, I ask, “What about the app? Does it mention where our rider was being dropped off?”

I silently beg for Octavia to say a direction opposite to the one we’re taking, but my prayers are left unanswered when she answers, “A hotel close to the venue at SoDo Park. Why?”

“No reason. Just curious.”

“To dodge her again or for a second rendezvous?” She crimps her brows, then slices her hand through the air. “Actually, don’t answer that. I don’t need to know. I’m just glad she couldn’t see me since your enormous head was in the way. I had enough disdained looks in Jersey. I’d like to skip a second bout here.”

With her mood nowhere near chipper, she strays her eyes to the scenery whizzing by her window. Once my backside returns to the seat Jess’s ass occupied for barely thirty seconds, I do the same.

For the twenty-mile trip, I try to keep my focus on anything but Jess. I miserably fail. I could say half my issue is that we have unfinished business, but it feels more than that. The way she looked at me when she thought Octavia meant more to me than blood—she does, but not in the way Jess was thinking—had nothing on the disdain in her voice when she realized whose lap she landed on.

She was so eager last week, she instigated every base we slid past. However, today she looked disgusted at the thought of getting down and dirty with me.
