Cash took the apple in hand, not taking a bite. “You killed a man tonight.”

Dev shook his head, grinning broadly. “I didn’t, but I do realize the mistakes I made. I’ll be more careful next time.”

“Next time?” Cash asked and rolled out of Dev’s hold, fighting Dev’s effort to bring him back in the circle of his arms.

“Next time when I tell you before I do it?” Dev asked with raised brows, following Cash as he moved around the small space.

Thankfully the fire alarm began shrieking. The smell of burned bacon permeated the apartment.

“Goddammit!” Dev rushed back to the stove, tossing the entire pan into the sink. He flipped the water on, a plume of smoke swirled toward the ceiling. Cash took the opportunity to leave the apartment. He needed time to think and process what they actually knew about the night’s activity.

Chapter 4

The pain in Cash’s gaze sliced Dev to the core. He hadn’t missed the hurt, glimpses of doubt and betrayal. This last week had been damned hard on his guy.

Cash loved him.

On the flip side, he cared just as deeply for Cash.

Goddamn he had tried to fight it. He was still pissed about being tricked and used. Probably be bitter until the day he died with the way Cash came into his life, pretending to be someone other than the undercover agent he was. But every minute of every day since, Cash had tried to make it up to him.

The fact was, he hadn’t made it easy for Cash.

Perhaps drugging someone as fundamentally good as Cash might have technically set their record straight. No doubt, it was a shit move.

The stress was getting to Dev too. He should have anticipated something like the government intercepting the text messages. An outdated, defective cell phone, that no Apple service technician could ever pinpoint why it still sent messages, should have been considered faulty.

His plant-loving secret agent had resisted the bite of the apple he offered. A first.

These silly apples always led to words of appreciation then eventually to sex of some kind. Every time before, Cash took the bite offered. Generally while Dev held it to his lips. He’d chew the bite as he dropped to his knees, unbuckling Dev’s belt.

He had to admit disappointment when Cash resisted the apple.

Dev got it. He colored outside lines more often than not. The foundation of Dev’s personality made it impossible for him to give a single inch without getting a foot in return.

That probably wasn’t going to change.

Maybe he should have rubbed the apple over his nipples before offering it to Cash.

Cash needed nipple rings. Oh man, Dev bounced back on his heels with the mental image in mind. Fuck, that’d be hot.

Maybe rub the apple over the crack of his ass. Cash liked to spend time back there, licking and nipping at his hole.

Who knew the proper approach? Dev certainly didn’t know how to handle any situation where he couldn’t fight his way out.

Clearly. Look at the state of his life right now. His hooker of an ex-wife had dropped his daughters off and taken off for New York. The same daughters who he’d found out weren’t actually his biological children but had instead come from his very own sperm donor of a fucking father. Which made the girls his sisters.

God damn that pissed him off. He breathed through the anger.

Focus. You’re in the middle of a pity party. Keep going.

His mother had an addiction to plastic surgery.

His sister was a secret undercover FBI agent. How she had pulled that off for all these years spoke to the holes inside the Disciples’ informant pool.

Financially, Dev was way overextended.

Fuck his life and fuck those goddamn text messages.

He clenched his fists, needing to punch something. He sure as hell couldn’t hit the motherfucking wall because then, he’d have to fix that bitch. Whatever.

His stomach growled and rumbled, reminding him of the breakfast he needed to finish.

The green light of the cameras was back on. Every move he made was monitored and recorded. Frustration stamped out any guilt he might have over last night. A far more comfortable place for Dev to be emotionally.

He’d bested the best field agents of the United States government. A bonus that made him feel proud while removing the stain of a human being, Cummings, from the planet.

Even better than that, the bitch Dallas DA’s days were numbered. She’d eventually quit under the scrutiny. For sure.

He took a bite of the apple while dumping the eggs in a new skillet. He looked back over his shoulder to the still open front door. This might be the first time he’d been alone in days.

Interestingly, he wasn’t sure he liked it one single bit.

=♥=

Cash dropped down in his office chair, placing a bottle of water to the side of his laptop. His attention remained on the small box in the corner of the computer’s screen that recorded Dev as he prepared their food. A pile of scrambled eggs sat to one side of the stove while Dev made an attempt at frying the bacon again. Dev cooked the strips in five-piece intervals this time. His biker ate at least two and a half pieces between each batch. The others were made to split between Dev, Joe, and Shanna. So bad for their arteries.
