“Maybe that’s because you’d already gotten it right and were waiting for him to be ready,” Knox replied, and I sure as shit hoped he was right. I also hoped things would be different this time with Remy. That he truly was ready.

“Shit, man. You’re better at this than you think. I feel like I should pay you or something.”

Knox rolled his eyes. “Don’t get used to it. I think I hit my quota for the next forty years.”

Somehow, I didn’t think so. “I can’t wait for some woman to show up and turn your world upside down.”

“You can fuck right off with that shit.” And then we were laughing again. “Where is he, anyway? Remington?”

“He left for New York today. He has interviews and fucking photoshoots and shit like that.”

“I can’t believe you’re dating someone famous. I thought Kellan was going to lose his shit.”

“Yeah, me too. He felt bad and apologized again later. Remy was cool with it, though. He likes you guys.” I was so damn grateful for that. I wanted Remy to have a fucking life, friends. I didn’t want him to live with all that shit trapped inside him.

Knox nodded. “You two seem real good together. I swear there were heart eyes and everything.”

Laughing, I flipped him off. “Shut the hell up and let’s go inside and watch a game or something.”

“I’ve heard this is called avoidance, but since I’m good at that, I’ll let it slide.” Knox stood, and we headed inside to watch TV. Bear followed along behind us.

“How are your kids doing?”

“Good. They’re going to come and visit for a week pretty soon. I miss the hell out of them.” Knox’s ex-wife and kids lived in Colorado.

“That’ll be cool.”

We ordered pizza, hung out for a few hours, and around eight Bear and I headed back home.

I took a quick shower before climbing into bed with my cell. I called Remy, hoping he would be free. Two rings later he answered. “Hey.” His deep voice skated down my spine in the best way.

“Hey yourself. How’s it going?”

“Is that him?” I heard in the background.

“Yeah, Brit. Now leave me alone for a minute.”

“Let me talk to him,” Brittany said.

“What? No. Why do you want to talk to him?”

“Because he’s my best friend’s boyfriend? The love of his life? A guy you’ve been obsessing about for like a hundred years and who you say is incredibly fucking hot?”

Well, shit. That all made me smile. “I am hot.”

“Oh my God! I love him already!” Her voice was closer, telling me she was likely right next to him and could hear me. She seemed so different from Remy, though I guessed I was too. I didn’t know what I’d expected when it came to her, but this wasn’t it.

“She won’t leave us alone if I don’t let her say hi,” Remy grumbled.

“It’s fine,” I told him.

“What are your intentions with my best friend?” was the first thing she said when she got on the phone.

“Ah, hell,” I heard Remy say, and I couldn’t help but chuckle.

“That’s between us, no?”

“I don’t like him anymore!” Brittany said, and again, I smiled. She continued, “I’m kidding. He hasn’t stopped smiling since he’s been here and, well, I guess you know how rare that is. There’s nothing like seeing Remy happy. I wish it happened more often, but I think maybe it will now, so I wanted to say thank you, to let you know he’s been in love with you his whole damn life, and if you hurt him, I’ll end you. Toodles!”

“What the fuck, Brit?” Remy said, but I could hardly hear him over my own laughter. “I’m sorry about that.” He was back on the phone now.

“Don’t be. She’s great, Rem. I’m glad you have her. I can’t be the only one shaking up your world.”

His breathing was slightly choppy, as though he was walking. “Sorry, I wanted to get to another room.”

“It’s okay. How you doing?”

He exhaled, and I could hear the nerves in the tremble of it. It was like he’d been waiting until he was alone with me to open himself up and be real. “I’m okay. I have the interview tomorrow and the photoshoot on Saturday. You know how this shit makes me. I should be used to it by now, but I swear it’s always like the first time.”

“There’s no should about it. You are who you are. I wouldn’t like people poking around in my life either.”

He was quiet for a moment, and I wondered if I said something wrong.

“It’ll happen, though…if you’re with me and we go public. I never considered how this would affect you.”

I could hear his breathing change even more, short, panting sounds. “Hey…Rem. Don’t worry about me. I don’t really care. People can dig into my life or talk about me as much as they want. Slow down, okay? We’re good.”
