I’d forgotten all about Melissa dropping by the house to drop off the manual Frank had borrowed and forgotten to return until I had to borrow my own shit back. Life in a small town.

I’d had a good few hours down and was thinking of heading next door to see what my pain was up to when the doorbell rang. I didn’t think anything of my state of undress when I went to open the door. I was wearing pants after all, but my chest was bare.

I opened the door to a smiling Melissa whose smile soon turned into an ogle. The damn girl was damn near drooling. “Oh hi Melissa, thanks.” I reached my hand out for the manual and she handed it over with her eyes still glued to my chest.

“Oh no problem Mr. Monroe, Merry Xmas.” I wanted to remind her where my eyes were located but just then Joy’s car pulled into her driveway. If I hadn’t been looking I would’ve missed the look on her face and it didn’t take much to decipher what the hell she was thinking.

The pretty young girl standing in my doorway and me half dressed. If she’d come by a few seconds earlier she would’ve seen the handoff, just my luck. I hurried and got rid of Melissa, but I still felt off, I didn’t like that look on her face.

I heard noise outside between our places and looked out the window just in time to see her dragging the garbage cans down to the sidewalk. What the hell was she doing? They’re not coming for another day.

There was something about her movements that caught my attention. She wasn’t walking like her usual spunky self, but that wasn’t it. When she swiped her hand across her face I got it and like a sap headed for the door.

How can I know her this well already? She has my ass trained and I’m pretty sure we haven’t spent near enough time together for that shit to happen. She was on her way back up her walkway but I didn’t miss the way she was focused on my house.

“Hey!” She damn near jumped out of her skin at my voice and just as I expected, she tried walking away without even acknowledging my presence. I would’ve ripped her a new one if she didn’t wipe her face again.

I caught up with her and stood in her way. “What’s the matter with you?” Like I didn’t know. She sniffled and glared up at me. I knew the words were burning a hole in her tongue that she wanted to ask, but she had too much pride for that.

If she wasn’t going to bring it up, I sure the hell was. I could’ve dragged shit out, pretend I didn’t know what was going on, but I hate fucking games. Unlike miserable ass females who do nothing but.

“What the hell are you crying about?” I wiped the tears roughly away from her face. “I didn’t sleep with the girl you pain in the ass.” I’m sure that’s what had her in a snit.

I half expected her to play the role, to act like I hadn’t caught her crying because her feelings were hurt. I should’ve known better. Another one of the reasons I like her so much, her straightforwardness and no holds barred in your face honesty.

“I don’t believe you.” She turned her face away and I knew she was embarrassed that she’d been caught. Pain in the ass was still sending glances towards my house like she thought I had the girl stashed away in there or some shit.

“I don’t care if you believe me or not, it’s the truth. Besides, what the hell do you care? Aren’t you the one who said we shouldn’t see each other? That we weren’t right for each other?” I raised and lowered my voice about three times in that one statement.

She rolled her damn eyes at me like I was the one who said that shit. “Well aren’t you Pita? Pain in the ass.” I grumbled the last bit but she heard me all the same and latched onto that shit like a leech. “Aha, that’s what that is, it’s an acronym. P.I.T.A, pain in the ass.” Her clueless scatterbrained ass.

“Not what we were talking about. What did you expect to happen when you tell a man like me that you don’t want him? That you’re not good together? Did you think I was just gonna sit around and wait for your damn time table to play out?”

“No but I did hope you’d at least have the decency to wait a month or two before moving on. That’s what I plan to do anyway.”

“What you plan to do about what?”

“Dating, I was going to wait at least a month before…”
