I smiled. “Good.”

Dan rolled her eyes. “You’re absolutely annoying when you’re smug like that. Scaring women isn’t a good thing, bro.”

“I’m not scaring her,” I lied. “I’m just glad that I make her uncomfortable. Comfort kills.”

She rolled her eyes as she eyed the man that was now walking up my front walk.

“What’s he doing here?” she hissed, grabbing her things as she all but threw her jacket on inside out.

“He’s here because I need help,” I explained. “Why?”

‘He’ was actually Aodhan. Her ex/baby daddy/lover of all things Danyetta.

“Yeti,” Aodhan said as he opened my front door without knocking. “What are you doing here?”

“Leaving,” she answered as she all but pushed past him. “Bye.”

My lips quirked up as she left in a flurry, and I looked over at my brother-in-law.

“When are you going to fix that?” I asked curiously.

Danyetta and Aodhan had married several years ago when they’d found out about Bowie.

At first, they’d hidden their relationship from me, as they had when they’d first met, too. Then Bowie had been conceived, and they’d had to come clean with their relationship.

Aodhan being my best friend was supposed to mean he stayed away from my little sister.

Apparently, that was something that he couldn’t do—then, or now.

When Bowie was born, a nurse had tried to switch Bowie with another at birth, and in his haste to find out why and fix the ‘mistake’ that the nurse had made, Aodhan had killed her.

Shit had gone from fucked up to really fucked up, and shortly after, Aodhan was convicted of manslaughter, and was sentenced to ten years in prison for his ‘misdeed.’

Even though it’d taken them nearly three years to convict him due to all the appeals that our lawyer had tried.

And since I was in jail myself, I didn’t really know all that much of what went on with the two of them.

But when I’d been sentenced, Danyetta and Aodhan had been on the verge of perfect family bliss.

Now, it was as if they both hated each other, and I didn’t know why.

From the looks of it, I might never know, either.

Aodhan was a good dad and was there whenever he could be, but he and Dan were constantly at odds.

“Whenever she lets me,” Aodhan said. “What was it you wanted to talk to me about?”

I leaned back in my chair and started to tell him my thoughts on Sheriff Graydon. What I thought we needed to do to fix that.

“We need to find someone that can blow him out of the water,” I decided. “And since everyone I know and or like are felons, we need to expand our search. You have any suggestions?”

“What about a woman?” he asked curiously. “Maybe that’s the exact shakeup this town needs. Fresh blood. And a vagina.”

I snorted out a laugh, but my eyes went to the front windows where I could now see someone pulling up in front of my house.

My smile grew.

“Why do you… oh.” Aodhan turned to look at the woman now marching up the length of my driveway. “You know her?”

“Not well,” I said. “You get on that vagina thing. Meanwhile, I’ll deal with this.”

Aodhan opened the door and stepped out just in time for Dutch to make it to my front door with her forward march.

“I don’t think you can deal with this,” Aodhan remarked as he gave Dutch a wide berth, then started back down the length of my walkway to his bike.

Dutch turned and watched him go, waiting until he was all the way out of sight before she turned back to me with a scowl.

“This is not funny,” she snapped.

CHAPTER 10

If at first you don’t succeed, it’s only ‘attempted’ murder.

-Wake to Dutch

DUTCH

“This is not funny,” I snapped.

His smirk deepened into a full-fledged smile.

“What’s not funny, darlin’?” he rumbled, sounding like sex and sin and everything I shouldn’t want but did.

You know how you wake up in the middle of the night, and you crave chocolate cake, and you got some from the restaurant that you didn’t finish, so you brought it home? How you wake up and can only think about that cake? But you try to stop yourself, because you’re a faster, and you’re not supposed to eat for another seven and a half hours, and cake was never really supposed to be on the menu anyway. However, all you can think about is that chocolate cake, and how good it will taste, and fuck it. You’ll just have a little bite, and then end up eating the whole thing?

Then you go to bed afterward, hating yourself for being so weak.

That’s exactly what Wake Westfield was to me.

A piece of decadent chocolate cake that I know damn and good well I shouldn’t taste. Yet, he was all I wanted. All I could think about. All I wanted to devour until there wasn’t a single stray piece of him left.
