“Yes, just basking right now.”
“Good, that is the way I want you to be.” He knelt onto the picnic blanket. “I have a gift for you.”
He held up a wrapped package and it looked like fabric. Victor loved to help decorate my sewing space and was always making cabinets or redesigning some of my old ones, to help brighten up my room.
I take the present from him, and he holds Bethany in his arms. I know he will protect her from the whole world. No one would be safe with the wrath of Daddy in play.
Taking the gift, I tear into it, and I am shocked to find it is a homemade quilt.
“Victor?”
“I know it’s not as good as what you could have done.”
Opening it in front of me, I see it is similar in design to the one I had made him that very first time.
“I shouldn’t have destroyed that one you made me. I am so sorry, and I will never do—”
I stopped him by closing the distance between us, wrapping my arms around him, and kissing him.
“I love you.”
“Forgive me,” he said.
“Victor, I love you, I forgave you long ago.”
And with that, he kissed me back, and I knew, no matter what else happened, we had each other and that was more than enough for now.
