“What do you have for me?” I say when I answer. Marco doesn’t call to shoot the shit; there’s always a reason behind it. I won’t admit this to him, but he’s actually grown on me. I think it annoys him that the jabs he used to make don’t bother me anymore.

“I’m not the only one looking into Raegan’s father.”

“Have you found him?” It’s taking longer than Marco thought it would. The man really had dropped off the map. I’d wondered if he was a dead John Doe at this point.

“You could say that, but I haven’t gotten eyes on him. He’s a slippery fucker with more than two identities.”

“Who else is looking in to him?”

“That I don’t know.” I can hear the irritation in Marco’s voice.

“It’s not the government, is it?”

He scoffs at that. “I’d know if it was them. It’s someone else.”

“Someone like you?” Now that would have my hackles rising.

“I wouldn’t call them like me but yeah, in a way.”

“Marco.”

“Yeah, I’m with you. Ivan Lawson starts to show interest in a woman and now someone that isn’t us is poking in to her past.” He really is on the same page as me.

I’m sure I’ve made enemies before. Not everyone is always happy with how a deal might turn out, but everything I’ve ever done has been legal. Doesn’t mean I still haven’t pissed some people off, but before now, I never really thought about people wanting some kind of revenge on me. Then again, there had been nothing in my life to take that would bother me before Raegan.

“What about her brother Travis? Was all of that shit cleared up from when Vincent pulled the rug out from under Anderson and BNA Holdings?”

That was the whole reason I even came to find Raegan. She’d called JJ in need of help because her brother had gotten himself into some trouble. To solve that trouble, he tried to steal from Vincent to pay his debt. It was a big fucking mess, but it worked out for all of us in the end. Except for Anderson and his company, BNA Holdings, which is falling apart even as we speak. Vincent cut them off, taking away their access to the docks his company ran.

“It’s not him. Let’s just say Grayson and I had a nice little chat with Anderson.”

“Right.” I can’t be mad at the stupid Anderson fuck. Travis either, for that matter. All that bullshit led us all here. Maybe in time I would have run into Raegan because of JJ, but maybe not. And who knows how long that might have taken? This sped everything up nicely.

“Her father is in the city. Been back a few years. He’d actually gone down to Colombia and dropped off the map for a decade. Not sure what brought him back a few years ago, but word is that he is around. Obviously not working a normal job. He’s trying to maintain staying off the map with his given name at least.”

“That’s fucking great.” I can do that math. “We both know why he’s likely back if he’s in the States. He could have been coming in and out.”

“He could have,” Marco agrees. “I’m going to be straight with you. While I cross some lines, there are others I don’t, and because of that, sometimes it’s harder to get intel on some things. Now people like me who don’t have their own code of morals can get information quicker.”

“I just don’t understand why someone would go looking for Raegan’s father unless—”

“They figured out she was trying to find him,” Marco finishes my thought for me. “I’ll run her laptop. I haven’t been checking it because she hasn’t been using it, but I’ll see if anyone else has been peeking around inside it.”

“The passport.”

“It’s been done. Are you thinking about taking that trip now?”

“Maybe, fuck. I don’t know.” I run my hand down my face. None of this makes sense, but it can’t be random. I’m missing a connection. And Raegan is way too important for me to miss anything.

“Do what you need to, but I do have a few informants in the cartel. It’s going to take a bit to get information from them. They can be hard to reach at times.”

“Whatever has to be done.”

“I know. No matter the cost,” he says before ending the call. I drop my cell phone down on my desk before turning on my computer.

I’m not sure who thinks they can use my sunshine to get to me, but once I find out, all they’ll ever know is darkness. Marco might have a moral code, but I don’t. Not when it comes to Raegan. If people thought I was ruthless, they’re about to find out that is my normal.

Now I’m out for blood.

“Whatever has to be done.” Ivan’s words rumble down the hallway before I hear what I’m guessing is his phone hitting his desk. I woke up to an empty bed. Something I’m not fond of anymore. My heart gave a small pang of fear when I realized he wasn’t there. I hate that I’m always worried that one day he’ll up and leave, and I’ll be all alone again.
