“While you’re stubborn as hell, when you decide to change something in your life or move around an obstacle, you make a decision and address it head-on. You’re able to adapt quickly.”

I shrug. “Not always. Some of my shit I’ve held on to for far too long.”

“I have a theory about that.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah, I think—”

I slam on the brakes as a car cuts me off. I pound on the horn as I curse the guy out. My heart is racing, I have my world in this truck.

“Asshole, scare my mommy. Stupid piece of shit,” AJ says in the back seat.

My cheeks heat. I turn slowly with my mouth hanging open to look at Lex. She has her hand over her mouth as she looks at me.

“Yeah, I was going to tell you, you may need to chill on the foul language. He listens to and watches everything you do.”

“Baby, I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking.”

She laughs. “It’s okay. We’ll correct him next time and from now on, you can watch what you say.”

“The kid is doomed. Have you heard my friends?”

She barks out another laugh. I shake my head as I think about my brother alone. His poor kids will curse like sailors before they make it to preschool. Looks like I’m on the way to the same.

“He’ll be fine and so will you.”

We stop at a light and I lean in to peck her lips. As long as these two are safe, I can figure out the rest.

“So how big is our house?” she says with a smile.

“Five bedrooms and four baths. A far cry from our first place.”

“I loved that place. Even with that a-hole neighbor.”

“I see what you did there. I’m fudging hungry. You want to stop to eat before we shop?”

“Abso-fudging-lutely,” she sings.

“Eat-eat,” AJ coos.

I chuckle and shake my head. This is the ease that she brought to my life when I first met her and fell in love. I’ll be honest.

I’ve adapted to move forward with her in my life, but there’s a part of me still waiting for her to be ripped from me. What if Uncle Blake knows something that could change the way I feel about her? Will I survive losing her again?

Although, I swear there isn’t anything else I don’t know about her, not anything from before the breakup. I still don’t know what he thinks I’m missing and I’m hesitant to ask.

I push the thought back. I can’t live in my past or my future. I can only be in the now. Right now, I love this woman and my son.

I’ll get to the rest... eventually.

Alexis

How in the world did I forget how much attention this man gets wherever he goes? I noticed he placed his wedding band back on. That hasn’t stopped these women one bit.

“No,” AJ cries and pulls away from the woman trying to flirt with his father as I walk out of the bathroom.

“Oh, sweetie. I was just trying to say hello,” she coos.

“Not my mommy,” AJ pouts.

Anthony laughs and kisses the top of his head. “There you have it. My son and I don’t like strange women touching us. You have a nice day.”

“Wow, asshole,” the woman snarls.

“No, that would be you. How dare you curse in front of my son and the audacity of you to just walk over and grab my bicep like I’m one of the pool boys your husband pays to keep from having to give you pipe. If you didn’t find me attractive and I put my hands on you, you’d be calling the cops.”

“I… I… I,” she stutters as her cheeks turn red.

I’m laughing so hard as I stop next to Ant I have to hold my stomach. He’s being a dick, but he has a point. I’m not even going to point out that he has cursed in front of our son. I look between the woman and Ant as she stands in shock.

“Is there a problem here?”

“No, huh, I just thought I saw someone I knew. You have a good day,” she hurries out.

“I can’t leave you anywhere, can I?”

Ant shrugs. “Not our type, right, little buddy?”

“No.” AJ glares in the direction the woman rushed off in.

I burst into laughter. “Let’s go, you two.”

Chapter 39

Bath Time

Ox

I hang up my call and go in search of my family. I find Lex and AJ in the bathroom. The moment I get to the doorway, I get why AJ gets so excited for bath time.

Lex is singing to him as she holds his toys up like they’re the singers. I lean into the doorjamb with a smile on my face as I watch. Today was one of the best days I’ve ever had.

“Again, Mommy, again,” my son squeals as the song comes to an end.

“Aww, stink, we need to wash your hair and get you out of here.”
