“Oh my God, Korrath!” she’d exclaimed. “That’s enough money to retire early!”
“Then why don’t you, my lovely one?” he had purred, stroking her cheek. “Why go back to work when we could spend time together instead?”
“I admit that teaching has gotten to be kind of a grind these last few years, but…what would I do?” she asked, frowning. “I mean, I can’t just sit around the house all day—no matter how rich I am now.”
“Let’s go exploring together,” Korrath had suggested.
“What…you mean travel the world?” Her gray eyes began to shine. “I’ve always wanted to see Paris!”
“Think bigger,” he told her. “Why don’t we explore your whole universe?”
Miranda had looked at him with wide eyes.
“The whole universe? That actually sounds kind of amazing.”
“It will be,” he had assured her. “We will see things together—travel to exotic locations and make memories. We will make love in a thousand exotic locations.” He stroked her cheek again. “Why don’t we have some fun?”
“I would love that,” she admitted. “I wasted years of my life with Martin, and he never wanted to go anywhere or do anything. I feel like I’m getting a do-over now.” She looked into his eyes. “I’m the luckiest woman alive.”
“It is I who am lucky, my lovely one,” Korrath told her. “To have finally found you and Claimed you as my own.”
Miranda had laughed.
“No, I’m the lucky one—you literally made me thirty years younger and now you’re offering me the universe on a silver platter! Nobody can top that.”
“And what do you say to my idea—that we travel and tour distant planets?” Korrath asked her.
“I say yes!” She smiled up at him, excitement sparkling in her lovely eyes. “Let’s travel to exotic places and have some fun!”
And so here they were now, about to visit the very first world on their itinerary.
There were many planets that the Kindred recommended as good places for a Warrior to take his bride, and Soloth Three was one of them. It was a tropical paradise and the native inhabitants were mild-mannered and easy-going bipeds who lived off the mildly alcoholic fruit of the Jub-jub trees, which grew almost everywhere.
Korath was excited to go there, and he knew Miranda was too. He envisioned the two of them walking on the sandy pink beaches under the light of the planet’s twin moons, drinking refreshing tropical drinks, and making love long into the night. It was going to be a perfect way to start their grand adventure together.
He smiled at his new bride and took a firmer grip on the steering yoke as he piloted into the fold in space. The two of them were going to spend the rest of their lives together, and he thanked the Goddess every day that he had been able to find and Claim his lovely Mature Elite.
THE END?
