God, if this doesn’t go well, I’m done. “I’ll let him in,” I call out to some guy named Larry. I’m still meeting everyone. It’s not like Jett has a huge number of people in his house, but I am starting to see a few familiar faces.

“Mr. Powers knows this man is coming?” Larry looks at me like he knows he doesn’t, but is covering his ass by asking.

“Yes, he’s my boyfriend.” I smile at him.

He rolls his eyes but nods and walks toward the area of the house I haven’t seen yet. I smooth my dark blue slip dress and open the huge door.

Brody bounds up the stairs holding a bouquet of flowers in his hand and a bottle of wine under his arm.

He’s about six feet and has always been on the thin side, and if it’s possible, he looks like he’s lost weight. For a guy who grew up on the beach, his pale skin just screams vitamin D deficient.

“Raven. You look so beautiful.” I go to take the flowers, trying hard not to be disappointed. So he doesn’t have Jett’s striking looks or body. Brody is a good man, though. He’s on track to become an architect.

“Aww, thank you.” I go to hug him, then realize I’m acting like his friend, so I get on my tiptoes to touch his lips. He looks a little surprised. I guess he thought I was just going to hug him.

“I missed you.” I smile again, pushing all thoughts of anyone but him to the back of my mind as I take his hand and drag him inside.

“Wow. So this is the famed Jett Powers’s house. How is he?” He looks around, then down at me.

“He’s a dick. But perfect for my mom. She’s a bitch, so…”

“Raven.” His brown eyes widen. “You don’t mean that.” I stop walking and turn to look at him.

“I do. Is that a problem?” He stares at me then shrugs, staying quiet, and I almost start laughing. What was I thinking? Whatever. He’s going to take my virginity, and then if he doesn’t like that I can’t stand my family, he can leave.

“Come on, I’ll show you the kitchen. Are you hungry?” I head in that direction only to have him move forward and grab my hand.

“I’m sorry. I’m nervous.” He smiles, and I almost sigh in relief, because he does have a nice smile.

“I’m nervous too.” I wrap my arms around his neck, but he clears his throat and backs away, holding the wine.

“I took this from my dad’s private stock. It’s amazing.” He grins, and for a moment warning bells go off. Is he fucking gay? I’m not an arrogant person, but I know I look amazing, and he’s more worried about the wine than my tits, which, I’m sorry, are fucking perfect.

Full, not too big, with big nipples, come on…

“Sure. Wine sounds perfect.” I take the bottle, not waiting to see if he follows me. Memories of the last time we were together make me falter. He did get hard, but then he’d lose it. Yeah, he’s not gay; he’s just a little timid.

I reach for the electric wine opener as he saunters in and looks out the windows.

“I’m starving. You want to order some food?” My voice gets louder as the hum of the opener quickly opens the bottle.

“Nah, I ate earlier. I’m vegan now, did I tell you that?” My hand freezes and I look over at him.

No wonder he looks so pale and gaunt. The man needs a steak, something bloody to get the color back in his skin.

“Um, no. Last I heard, you were a vegetarian.” Turning the wine opener back on to finish, it dawns on me how uncomfortable this is. I know we haven’t talked as much since we both were slammed studying for finals. But we still talked. You would think he would tell me this. It’s kind of a big thing. It would be for me. But I love food, including meat.

He turns and looks at me, then at the wine. “Yeah, the health advantages of being vegan just seemed right. I mean, I really want…” And I tune him out as I look around for some wineglasses. Brody is passionate about animals. Hence, I understood the vegetarian thing, but vegan… that’s a whole ’nother level. I know it’s trendy, and I’ve tried vegan restaurants several times. It always gives me horrible acid reflux, and I have bloat for days.

“I can’t find wineglasses, so these will have to do.” I talk over his preaching. He looks a little startled, but nods at the two glasses I hold in my hand.

“As long as you feel good,” I say lamely because he has his hands in his pockets looking like a kid who’s just been scolded. For fuck’s sake, he’s two years older than me. Why does he seem so immature all of a sudden?
