Oh god, oh god, what do I do? I suppose there isn’t anything I can do at this very moment, so I decide to eat, which is something I’ve been skilled at since my earliest years. My stomach rumbles as I unwrap my yummy gruyere and ham sandwich. I was so nervous this morning that I’d forgotten to eat breakfast, so now, I'm starving. I take a bite of the tasty loaf as I stare off into the distance, still thinking about Prince Eric. Is he going to have me fired? God, I hope not.

Maybe I should ask for a transfer before I get fired. You know, taking the bull by the horns and all that. Would that even help? Well, the long and the short of it is that I don't know how I can ever show my face around Prince Eric again. I'm so embarrassed that I flashed my panties at the handsome man this morning. Goddamn the maid’s uniform! Why did the stupid fabric have to get caught in the lacy material of my thong?

Even worse, why was I wearing a thong? I suppose it’s my secret of sorts. Even if I’m dowdy and proper on the outside, I like knowing that inside, I’m a fiery, sassy woman. I love the feeling of slippery silk against my private parts, and it keeps me going through the day. Of course, there’s no boyfriend or husband to tear the lingerie off once I get home, but it’s my secret, and I adore it.

But now, I’m in a hopeless conundrum because of the afore-mentioned lingerie! I know what. After lunch, I'm going straight to Mary to ask her to transfer me to another section of the castle. I won’t give a reason; I’ll just say it’s necessary.

But then, a nervous pageboy comes scuttling through the garden, sweating profusely as if he’s just run a marathon. I've seen him running errands for the royal family before, but what could he be doing out here in the garden right now? No one's out here but me. He comes up to where I’m sitting, trying to catch his breath.

“Are you alright?” I ask, genuinely concerned.

“Yes,” he manages to get out. Then, he fumbles through his pocket and pulls out a note. “Kitty right? This is for you.” His hand shakes as he passes me the note. Then he runs off, disappearing just as quickly as he’d appeared. I stare at the note, confused. Maybe it's from management? Maybe it’s about my raise? Well, that’s about to go to hell in a hand-basket, they just don’t know it yet.

I carefully unfold the thick stationary. It seems like the kind of card stock someone would draft a very important letter on, given its heft and weight. But then, my eyes squint and my fingers go numb as I read the note because this can’t possibly be true.

Kitty – Join me in my chambers at eight tonight.

Your Prince

Holy hell on wheels! Oh god, what in the world is going on? Prince Eric wants me to meet him in his private quarters later on this evening? But why? To berate me? To fire me in person? To laugh at my face, not to mention my wobbly, dimpled ass? My cheeks flame as tears come to my eyes. This is going to be horrible, I just know it.

I stuff the paper into my bosom, trying not to cry. Obviously, I’ve made a huge mistake. I should have pounded on the prince’s door this morning before barging in. Hell, the music in the living room should have tipped me off that the chambers were occupied. But now, the shit has hit the fan … and I’m going to pay for it with my head.

CHAPTER 6

Eric

I take one last drag of my cigarette, then toss it onto the ground and stomp on it. It’s littering, I know, but at this point, I don’t give a fuck. Then, I glance through the window of the Chancellor's office and watch as he shakes hands with the new interns on his staff. I wish I didn't have to be here right now. In fact, I even tried to convince my sister Ella to come in my place, but she already had prior obligations.

Well, might as well get it over with. I straighten up my tie and make my way into the office. Everyone turns toward me, bowing out of respect. To be honest, that sort of thing gets annoying after a while. For once, I'd like to walk into a room and be acknowledged as Eric, and not as the Prince of Chromia.

“Good afternoon,” I say, ready to get this over with.

“Good afternoon, Your Highness,” the interns chant in unison. I grab the hand of the young man closest to me and shake it firmly.
