“No idea,” Cole said with a shrug. “He was dead when I got there. But I saw an opportunity, and I took it. For years, I’d been planning the downfall of Prentice Sawyer. After Caro died, Prentice was lost in misery. He was suffering just like he deserved to. Locked away in that house, letting everything fall to pieces around him. The rest of you scattered, abandoning him. I was happy to leave him alive as long as every moment was filled with the pain he deserved.”
“But you didn’t kill him?” I asked. “After all that?” I shook my head.
“I planned and I waited, and then the moment presented itself. Prentice was dead, and I used his murder to get everything I wanted.” Cole paused, his eyes surveying his jail cell. “Almost everything,” he clarified. “But I didn’t pull the trigger.”
“I’m not buying it,” West said from beside me.
Cole lifted his chin and said, “You think I shot Prentice? Then prove it.”
