If I never walk properly again, I couldn’t care less. As long as Kane keeps giving it to me like that, I’d gladly spend my whole life on my back.

Bending down and picking up the T-shirt, I think must be mine. I know once I slip it over my head and smell his woodsy, manly cologne that it’s Kane’s. Pulling it all the way over me, giggling a little when I realize it fits and feels way better than any oversized tee I own.

I make it to the door and freeze on the spot. The sound of my mom’s voice on speaker mixing with Kane’s sends a jolt of panic through me.

And at the exact same moment, I spy the sheets on his bed.

Our bed…

Freshly marked with living proof that I’m no longer a virgin, but freaking me out at the same time.

Those sheets must cost more than I make in a month…Six months!

But the sound and tone of my mom’s voice cancel everything else out.

But Kane’s voice is even. Deep as always, he doesn’t sound near as excitable as my mom.

“…I appreciate the help you arranged, Kane, I really do. But what the hell’s gotten into Jen today?” I hear her say.

Asking myself the same question, I can’t help but smile at the memory of Kane balls deep inside me. The face he made as he filled me with his seed.

Oh, I’ve got a rough idea about what’s “gotten into me” today, mom…

But there’s no time for horsing around.

If mom’s calling Kane, it means only one thing. She wants me home and pronto by the sounds of it.

Kane has other ideas, though. And chewing my lip as I crane my neck by the half-open door, I strain to catch everything they’re saying.

“I know, Sage. I know…,” Kane replies, sounding patient but firm.

“I just think she wants a little time to herself, away from home, I mean,” I hear him explaining to my mom.

Feeling my face twist into a grimace. Begging Kane in my mind not to say anything about us.

“And that’s why I think the trip to see Abby in New York would be good for her,” Kane says, finishing his sentence and driving the final nail in my coffin as far as my mom’s concerned.

“Alright. That’s it…,” Mom snaps, and I feel the blood in my veins turning to ice.

This is my worst nightmare.

But Kane stands his ground, and I can tell that they’ve been on the phone long before I woke up, talking about god knows what else.

Shit.

Shit!

“…I know you mean well, Kane. And I’m not sorry. I just can’t afford to have Jen go off to New York, of all places. We can barely make ends meet as it is… And don’t tell me you’ll pay for it again either. We don’t need your charity, okay?” she says hotly.

A part of me hopes she’ll hang up in a rage, but for some reason, she stays on the phone, asking Kane to put me on the line.

“I told you, Sage. Jen’s sleeping. I think she was pretty upset by what happened earlier…,” he says, but the sound of my mom returning a volley of heated words is mixed with the slow, melodic chime of the doorbell.

“Sage? I gotta go…I’ll have Jen call you when she’s up and about, okay?” Kane says abruptly, but mom’s already screeching about me being fired and not bothering to even come home ever again before he ends the call.

Double shit.

That means she’ll be on her way here as soon as she can.

Or does it? She did just say, “never come home again.”

A part of me warms to that idea more and more by the second.

If it isn’t her at the door already. But it can’t be.

I hear Kane’s cheerful voice greeting whoever it is at the door, the sound of more than just one person suddenly moving through the house as he gives instructions.

“Just over there, thanks.” And “Oh! Uh…Over there, please…,” piquing my curiosity.

I almost forget all about what I just heard him and my mom discussing.

Almost. But not quite.

I can’t believe Kane even suggested New York to my mom. But then again, I have to remind myself about everything he’s promised and delivered on so far.

And all in one day.

This is the real deal, Jen. And like it or not, you gotta break some eggs if you wanna make that omelet that spells K.A.N.E.

Whatever he’s up to now, I can just hear the smile on his face in his voice, as if dealing with my mom is as easy as doing whatever he’s doing now.

The sudden smell of food hit my senses, then fresh flowers.

The tinkle of cutlery and the sounds of Kane saying he’ll take things from here.

Bidding our silent visitors goodnight before I pluck up the nerve to show my face.
