“We can’t. I mean, what if people found out we were up here together?”
Laughing, I asked, “Who would find out? The only people who know we’re together is my family and yours.”
I watched as her throat bobbed. “What if someone sees us?”
“In case you didn’t notice, no one is around for miles.”
“For…for miles?”
“Yeah. I don’t even think anyone with a cabin on the river lives full time up here.”
“What if a snowstorm blows in and there’s no one to help us get out?”
I pushed off the counter. “I made sure the weather was good. You don’t honestly think I’d bring you up here if there was a chance we’d get stuck, do you?”
She folded her arms against her chest, or at least she attempted to. Her large down jacket made it hard for her to look angry. “I wouldn’t put anything past you, Braxton Bradley. This is stupid. When I said I wanted to learn how to fly fish, I pictured it in a river in the middle of summer where I could soak up the sun. Not in winter with a chance of freezing to death.”
“You know how busy my summers are, Harlee. If I’m going to teach you, this is the perfect time.”
“I’ll freeze!”
Laughing, I walked up to her and grabbed her dropped bag. “Nonsense. I made sure you have all the clothes you’ll need for fishing.”
“You don’t know what size I am.”
I lifted a brow as I swept my gaze over her heavily covered body. “I’m pretty good at figuring that out…and I got a close-up look at the bed and breakfast. Remember?”
She snarled her lip at me, but I ignored her.
I tossed her bag onto the bed—and something started buzzing inside.
“What is that?” I asked. “Did you bring an electric toothbrush?”
Her eyes widened as a look of horror moved across her face. She pushed past me and grabbed for her bag, fumbling to open it. “Shit! Shit! Shit!”
Glancing over her shoulder, I caught sight of what she was desperately trying to turn off.
“You brought a vibrator with you?” I asked in disbelief.
Shooting me a go-to-hell look over her shoulder, she said, “I thought I would be in a room by myself!”
Smiling, I took a step back. “I don’t mind if you use it.”
She turned and put her hands on her hips. “I supposed you’d like to watch as well.”
“Oh, back to this conversation, are we? Again, if you’re offering, I won’t say no.”
Harlee put her hands on my chest and gave me a hard push. “Damn you, Brax! Did you know we’d have to share a bed?”
I couldn’t help it, I laughed. She looked so damn cute with her nose all crinkled up and her brows pulled down hard. Fuck if she wasn’t stunning, even angry.
“You think this is funny?” she said. “I want to go back home. Now.”
Holding up my hands, I took a step away before she swung and punched me. “Hold on, Harlee. I’m sorry I laughed. Calm down. The sofa is a pull-out bed; I’ll sleep on that. There’s also a small privacy screen leaning up against the wall over there. You can put it between us.”
She raised one perfectly arched brow. “A privacy screen? You think that’s as good as a door?”
“It’s better than nothing.”
Letting out an exhale, she tossed her hands in the air. “I give up. Whatever. It’s fine. I don’t care anymore.”
I could have egged her on, but I decided she was probably about to explode and if I laid any more on her—like the fact that we had no food—she could crack.
“After you unpack, we should head to the grocery store in town.”
When she slowly turned and looked at me, the fight-or-flight in my body kicked in. “You didn’t bring any food?”
I stuck my hands in my pockets and glanced at her. “To be honest, I forgot about the food.”
Her mouth dropped open. “You forgot about food? Brax, how?”
I rocked back and forth on my feet as I looked anywhere but at her. “I was excited about coming up and fishing.” When I peeked back at her, her eyes were closed and her lips were moving. I cleared my throat. “Are you talking to yourself?”
Her eyes snapped open, and I almost screamed like a little girl at the look of death she was giving me.
“I’m praying for strength so I don’t find something in this freaking cabin to murder you with.”
I let out a laugh, and when she looked even more pissed off, I pressed my lips together.
“Smart man,” she said as she grabbed her purse. “Since I’m still wearing my coat, let’s leave now.”
“I don’t think anything is open yet, Harlee. Let’s get a little bit of fishing in, and then we’ll head in. We can eat lunch in town first; I know a great little place.”
