Her girl as in her bike. Beat to shit and it got her all the way from Harlow to Leighbridge. The makers of that damn thing deserved an award and an obscene cash prize.

“I got back on and drove here, losing him through the back alleys.”

“Who is him?” Liam asked. “Was it Grant?”

She started to shake her head and thought better of it. “Wasn’t Grant. I don’t know who the fuck it was. He was a young guy though. Blond hair, brown eyes, about my age. I didn’t clock much else with the gun to distract me.”

“This was timed,” Bane said. “Planned. In one night, they almost took all of us out. The bomb in the warehouse and Gen coming out of her safe house. But how?” Bane punched the wall. “How did he know where you were, Gen? How did Grant know you were watching him at the café? Or that someone would be along in a moment to lift that note?”

“Can’t answer the first question,” I said. “But I can answer the rest.”

I THREW OPEN THE DOORS. “Where is he?”

Ryker climbed off the stairs. He didn’t ask who I was talking about, just jerked his head at my office. “Waiting for you inside.”

By waiting for me inside, he meant River was sitting at my desk—feet up and messing with my Newton’s Cradle.

“Was it you?”

“You’re going to have to be more specific,” River drawled. “Was it me what?”

I shoved his feet off. Grabbing him by the collar, River was hauled smirking out of my chair and shoved against the bookshelf.

“The warehouse was a trap,” I hissed. “Something was going to happen at nine all right. We were supposed to be blown up!”

“Well, as these are corporeal fists wrinkling my jacket and not ghostly ones, you escaped. I’m glad to see it.” The smirk twitched for a second. “Is Kenzie and her sister okay?”

“Why don’t you ask if my brothers are okay?” I slammed him again. “Why don’t you ask about my sister?! They came for all four of us last night. Genny was shot coming out of her place. What did you do, River?”

He lifted a brow. “Me? What I did was track down the guy behind this and serve him up on a platter? And I didn’t do it for free. Why don’t you get your hands off me and give me the diamonds?”

Everything Sienna saw in her vision—everything I should’ve seen came back to me. “It was all too neat. You found Grant oddly fast. And the day you do, he happens to meet with the guy who tried to take me out, and then happened to pass him a note for your guy to lift. We all rush over there, and no one’s in the way when they go after Genny. Did you make a deal, Delaney? Huh? Decided to get rid of the Merchants for good?”

River shoved me away. I drew my knife at the same time as him, both of us glowering over the blade’s edge.

“Think, Bellisario,” he snapped. “You’ve known me for too long to believe I’d pull such an obvious play. I thought that meet was legit same as you. Getting myself mixed up in bombings and shootings? What’s the upside for me?”

“Your crew finally takes over Cinco City.”

“My crew isn’t the take-over-the-city type. You’re the kings, and we’re the tax collectors. We keep you honest. We keep you humble. If you’re gone, whose trucks do I jack? Whose gang do I trick, undercut, and rob? Who’s going to hand over seven million in diamonds to protect his little family? Any other gang would’ve hunted and killed every homeless person they laid eyes on by now, but not the sainted Merchants—convincing themselves they’re the good guys while they fish in rivers of blood.”

“Fuck you.”

River threw his head back laughing. “Fine, I guess I deserve that. But your accusations, you can shove those up your ass. If you don’t believe anything else I say then believe this, I’d never put Kenzie in danger, and I’d damn sure wouldn’t work for a man who did. It’s pretty much a fact now that Grant is behind this, and he almost killed Kenzie and Elizabeth. She’s six years old, Sunny. I have a fucking conscience.”

“Oh, please. You gonna act like you care about Tricky? If that’s the case, why did we miss you at the last six birthday parties, Uncle River?”

“Why didn’t I get an invite, nephew?”

I grinned widely. “We were going to put it in the mail, but— oops, you don’t have an address.”

“Very clever. Are we finished now? You got your shots in, shoved me around a little, blamed me for the problems in your life. You checked off all your boxes, so how about we get back to business?” He matched my smirk. “You know how much my dear sister hates it when we fight.”
