Afterward, he’d taken care of her. He’d treated her like a princess, and she was never going to forget it as he helped her to wash and took care of the sheets, cleaning up the blood. She had never felt so embarrassed in her life.

He wouldn’t let her go, and they ended up having sex multiple times afterward, and even then, he kept asking her how she felt, if she was okay, if she wanted to stop. She never wanted him to stop.

Suzie came back with their drinks. Mae took the distraction, lifting it to her lips, and taking a nice, long sip.

“You can’t keep drinking forever,” Caleb said.

Mae knew he was right. The chocolate milkshake was so cold, and if she didn’t stop soon it was going to give her brain freeze.

“You want more?”

“Don’t you?” he asked.

“Define what you mean.” She was so not good at this. Mae didn’t know if this was flirting or not.

Caleb laughed. “I want to fuck you more. I want to explore your body and get you all ready to take my cock, again and again and again. Don’t you want to know how far this can go?”

Mae pressed her thighs together, a little taken aback by the picture he’d painted for the two of them. That did sound ... so hot. She licked her lips and was tempted to take another sip of her milkshake. Right now, she needed to keep a level head, and wasn’t chocolate some kind of aphrodisiac? Maybe that was affecting her decision-making.

“Yes,” she said.

Okay, Mae didn’t know what was happening. The calm, rational side of her brain had to be shutting down.

Caleb smiled. “I was expecting to have to ... convince you.”

Mae didn’t know what was going on right now. Life was way too short, and she knew that after losing so many of her family—her parents, then her grandmother, followed by her grandfather. Loss was painful, but it also made you realize how short life was.

She had no idea what she and Caleb had. He was the town bad boy. Every woman wanted him, and right now, he was sitting opposite her, trying to convince her to have more with him.

More sex.

More fun.

That is what she wanted.

This was not a proposal.

Emily had stopped by for lunch and even hinted that there was nothing wrong with having a little fun, if that was what she wanted.

Mae couldn’t deny it. She wanted Caleb.

Why did she have to keep fighting what she actually wanted? She didn’t. The town already knew she had left his place, so the damage had already been done. Caleb knew she’d been a virgin, that awkwardness was long gone. Having fun with him sounded like the most logical solution, and the temptation was so damn strong.

“Does that mean you don’t want to? Because I’m not going to play hard to get?” she asked.

Caleb laughed. “Not at all. I like it. It makes me feel less like a stalker.”

This made her smile.

“I do have some rules,” she said.

He groaned. “Babe, I’m not good with rules.”

“Hear them out, you never know, there might be some you agree with.”

He shrugged, and then nodded. “Go ahead.”

“No cheating,” Mae said. “You want to have another woman, that’s fine, but you end this with me. I don’t care if this is casual, I won’t be sleeping with you, and you with other women. You want anyone else, we’re done.”

“The same goes for all men,” he said.

“I won’t be sleeping around. That is not my style.”

“Fair enough.” It was something he couldn’t argue with. “What else?” he asked.

Mae tried to think, but the truth was, the only thing she could think about was him sleeping around.

“One more thing.”

“You’re not going to give me a whole list?” Caleb asked. “You don’t want to start telling me how you want me to dress? Who you want me to talk to?”

“No, I don’t care about any of that. Okay, one more thing. Don’t fall in love with me,” she said.

Caleb looked at her. “Huh?”

“You heard me. This is casual sex, so don’t start getting any ideas about what might or might not happen.” She smirked at him, because she knew she had taken him by surprise.

“Fine, I will not fall in love with you. You do surprise me, Mae. You do know who you’re dealing with, don’t you?” he asked.

“Yeah, but I guess the real question is, do you know who you’re dealing with?” Mae asked.

****

Caleb walked Mae back to her place.

He had no expectations and he was more than happy to take this at her pace. He didn’t want to make it uncomfortable for her. Once they arrived, Mae looked at her door, which led to the apartment above the bookstore.

“Uh, do you want to come in for coffee?” she asked.

Caleb looked at her place, and then at her. “Do you want me to come in for coffee?”
