“It was. It is. I love her.”

Aurora gasps, and I shrug.

“I haven’t told her yet. I’m waiting for the right time. But it’s the truth. I loved her from the second I saw her. It’s a cliché, fine, but it’s also the truth. She’s the only woman I’ll ever want. I want to break glass thinking about her with anybody else. I want – I’m going to – be with her forever. If that’s not love, what is?”

“It sounds like love to me,” Aurora says, smiling. “And you’re not worried she’s….”

Aurora gestures to the window, the Hollywood sign, as if indicating the fame- and money-hungry nature of our world.

“She’s not using me,” I tell Aurora. “I was scared of that at the start, but you can’t fake the things we’ve shared. People go after actors, try to dig their hooks in, and try to make a name for themselves through them… we both know this. But Alice is so far away from those sorts of people, I feel like an ass for thinking she could be one.”

Aurora smiles. “I’m happy for you. And I’m sorry for inviting Kennedy here without telling you. I get carried away sometimes. This is my business.”

I nod. “It all worked out in the end.”

After leaving Aurora’s office, I wonder if I just lied when I said it all worked out. I’m still waiting on word from Alice about her conversation with her sister.

I know how much Alice cares about her sister, and cares for her since she’s supporting her.

Alice doesn’t have to do that alone anymore.

She doesn’t have to work at the restaurant.

“Are you sure?” she said when I told her she could quit.

“I’m going to always take care of you,” I replied. “Yes, I’m sure.”

I sit in my car without pulling away, my phone resting on the passenger seat, my heart thudding as I wonder what will happen if her sister asks Alice to choose.

Can a celebrity crush be that intense?

I know from my manager they can since I’ve received my fair share of fan mail over the years, women confessing all kinds of craziness to me.

But I never wanted them, never wanted anybody before I laid eyes on Alice.

My phone vibrates.

I snatch it up quickly.

Wow, that was a shock.

My heart beats with even more pressure as if sending disaster signals through my body.

What was? What happened? Don’t leave me hanging here.

It’s good news, she replies. She doesn’t have a crush on you. She lied. Honestly, I’m a little pissed at her, but she was so upset when she told me it’s hard to stay angry.

What did she tell you?

I type fast, smirking as I wonder if my texting speed has increased ever since Miss Mystery and I started.

Basically, Natasha has been talking about plastic surgery for a while. I think people should be free to make their own decisions, but I haven’t been shy about my opinion when it comes to her. I don’t think she needs it. I think she’s beautiful the way she is.

I read this text, then see three dots appear, telling me she’s typing another.

She got pissed at me, Alice goes on. So, when she saw my laptop open with photos of you on it – yes, I was crushing on you – she decided to lie and say she had a crush too. It was supposed to be a small dig to get back at me. But then the interview happened, and she felt so guilty she couldn’t face me. She’s been avoiding me ever since. She feels terrible about it.

I lean back, my lips spreading warmly, knowing this is it now.

I can put my plan into action.

Reaching into my inside jacket pocket, I take out the ring box, open it and stare down at the glistening diamond, thinking of the moment when I ask her, thinking of all the moments which will come after, the life which will come after.

Weston?

I put the ring down.

I’m here. I was just thinking about how happy this makes me. There’s nothing stopping us now, nothing at all. We’re free to be together. Forever.

It’s all I want, she replies. Where are you now?

Aurora’s office. I had to finish up a few things.

Will I be seeing you later?

I smirk, laughing softly. You don’t ever have to be shy with me anymore. I’ll see you every day until you get sick of me. I’ll spend as much time as I can with you until you tell me to get lost.

That will never happen, she replies. I literally can’t even imagine it. I’m addicted to you….

Not as addicted as me, I send. You’re the only woman I want, the only one I...

We’ve said it all before, but it never gets old, not for us.

My chest feels light as I text, like I can finally let it all go. The stuff about Dad and Maxwell, and all the darkness trying to hold me back since I was a kid.
