He stood and rounded the table, enfolding me in his arms. “Thank you,” he said simply, his voice shaking with emotion. “You have no idea how much that, how much you, mean to me, my girl.”

“Thank you for helping me. Loving me when I wasn’t so lovable.”

He kissed my forehead. “You were always lovable. You just resisted loving me back. But it was worth it. And this is the best new memory—ever.”

Maddox stood and began clapping. The others joined in, breaking the intensity of the moment and making us laugh. Dad hugged me again. “Where is Luc?”

“Right here.” My husband called out as he appeared from behind the door. “Waiting on my errant wife.” He crossed the patio. “All done now? Can we commence with the honeymoon?” He held out his hand. “Can I have my wife now?”

I reached for his hand, then stopped and snagged the shirt sleeve, tucking it back into my pocket.

“What are you going to do with that?” Bentley asked.

“Sew it into a baby quilt one day,” I responded.

“Better get to it! Baby-making time!” Aiden called to Luc. “Richard isn’t getting any younger.”

“And you’re not going to get any older if I catch you,” Dad threatened and lunged.

Luc tugged me to the door, and I followed. I glanced over my shoulder before we went inside and met my dad’s gaze. He winked and lifted his chin, silently telling me to go. He laid his hand on his heart, letting me know how he was feeling.

I echoed his gesture then turned and followed Luc.

I left the past where it belonged. In the past.

From now on, I was only going to look forward.
