“I just wondered because you’re good with them. Not that I’m a kid.”

“Nope, not at all,” August teased.

Reese looked up and grinned at him, and damned if that wasn’t one of August’s favorite things in the world.

“Maybe it’s strange,” Clint said, “but it’s not something I thought about, probably because I’ve never been serious about someone. I like kids. I have two nieces. They’re a lot younger than you. It wasn’t that I didn’t want kids; it just never happened.”

August reached over and squeezed Clint’s shoulder. He didn’t know if his friend needed the supportive gesture, but August wanted to give it to him. Clint gave him a playful wink in return.

“What’s your favorite subject in school?” Clint asked.

“Art, of course. Otherwise, science, I guess, but not gonna lie, I don’t love school.”

“Neither did your dad. At least not middle school.”

Reese’s head shot up, eyes zeroing in on August, who held his hands up in defense, knowing what was coming. “I thought you were good in school! And you’re always going on and on about how important it is.”

“I was good, but that doesn’t mean I liked it. I didn’t really like school until…well, my last two years of high school and then into college. But it is important.”

“But why is it so boring?” Reese asked.

“I’m going to stay out of this,” Clint added.

“See? Even Clint thinks school is boring.” Reese held his head high as if he was proud of that.

“Hey, don’t go getting me into trouble. I didn’t say that. I had trouble focusing, more when I was younger. I learned to deal with it, but it was hard at first. I was never real book smart, so it was a lot of work for me. I enjoyed PE, woodshop, classes where I could move around and do things.”

They talked while the potatoes boiled, and then August coated the chicken and Clint fried it. Reese joined into the conversation some, but he mostly lost himself in his art the way he often did, sketching page after page of whatever he was working on.

August mashed the potatoes while Clint made white gravy.

It was nice, sitting around Clint’s table, the three of them. They ate together, Clint feeding Butter with his dogs in the kitchen. When the dogs were done with their food, they came to try and score some of Reese’s.

August couldn’t remember the last time he’d enjoyed a meal more, one where he’d laughed so much. It was late when they finished, but it wasn’t quite dark outside yet.

“Should I take the dogs out?” Reese asked.

“Sure,” August replied.

Reese grabbed a couple of the tennis balls from the box by the sliding glass door and headed out with a pack of dogs behind him.

“He’s a good kid,” Clint said. “He seems to be doing better.”

“He is. It’s amazing, really. Thank you for this…teaching him and everything.”

“I enjoyed it. He definitely wants to keep working on it.” Clint went to the kitchen, and August followed.

They were away from the window, and he couldn’t see Reese outside. Clint had his back to August, straightening up the counter. August’s pulse beat like crazy against his skin as he pressed the front of his body against the back of Clint’s. “I’ve wanted to kiss you all night.” He brushed his thumb over Clint’s arm. He loved that he could say things like that to Clint now, that he could kiss him and touch him, and their next time alone together, Clint would let August fuck him.

“Well, my neck is right by your mouth.” Clint cocked his head to the side, away from August.

He smiled into the curve where it met Clint’s shoulder and kissed him. “Right there?”

“Over some.”

August found another spot, pressing his lips against Clint and flicking him with his tongue. “Here?”

“Over just a little more.”

He moved to Clint’s nape. “Here?” Kiss. “Or here?” Another one. He kept going and asking and just tasting as much of Clint’s skin as he could. August rubbed his dick against Clint’s ass, wishing they were alone and naked, and fuck, he would never get over how lucky he was. How someone like Clint could want him.

“You’re gonna get us in trouble,” Clint said breathlessly.

August heard Reese outside, yelling for the dogs to get the ball.

“I know. I can’t help it. I think I’ve wanted this with you since before I understood what it even meant. And now I can’t believe you’re offering it to me, even if we don’t know where it will go.” He tickled his fingers from Clint’s wrist to his elbow before running them up and down his chest, the muscles in his abs, and back up again.

“Christ, August. Are you trying to kill me here?” Clint grabbed August’s hand and placed it over the bulge in his jeans. August palmed him, rubbed him, remembering what it was like to have Clint inside him.
