"One year?" Autumn asks.

"Three-hundred and sixty-five days."

"Do I have to live with you?"

"You can have the estate if you'd rather," I offer, knowing there's not a chance in hell she'll take me up on that. She hasn't stepped foot in our childhood home since she left it. But I don't want her on her own right now. Not with the Vipers out there. Not with Jimmy Gatlin out for blood.

"No thanks," she says, wrinkling her nose in distaste. "I'll stay at your place."

I fight a smile. She acts like my place is a one-bedroom studio with no privacy instead of an eight-thousand square foot mansion with a guest wing. Hell, I think she'd prefer the one-bedroom studio. Money never mattered much to Autumn. She always had plenty of that. It was freedom she craved. After our mom died when she was fourteen, she didn't have much of that.

I wish like hell I'd known then how bad things were for her. I would have dropped everything and come home. She wouldn't have had to face it alone. But she never said a word until the day she left home. She didn't want me to know.

"You aren't allowed to pay me a ridiculous salary," she says. "Or give me a fancy title. I don't want people thinking this is permanent."

"I think I can arrange that," I say, relaxing slightly.

She expels a long-suffering sigh, looking at me like she's headed toward the gallows instead of moving home for a year. "Fine. Then I guess I'll move here for a year." She throws up a hand. "But only for a year. And only because it'll be good for the environment."

"Noted," I say, fighting a smile. She's coming home. Fucking finally.

"Your sister is hot," Cormac "Giant" Carmichael says, grinning at me over my desk an hour later. He props one boot on the edge, leaning back in his chair with his hands laced together behind his head, the picture of casual comfort.

He came in as she was headed out. They haven't met before now. I don't think Autumn knew what to think of him. He's big, loud, and has never met a stranger in his life. She's hesitant about the MC in general. Like most people, she doesn't know much about MCs like ours. It's a whole new world to her. But she'll get used to my brothers.

"I will kill you," I say, staring at Giant levelly. He thinks he's funny, but he's not. He plays too fucking much. Besides, he and Autumn would never work. Ever. Autumn needs someone who won't smother her. She grew up watching our father cage our mother and call it love. She needs someone who can protect her without going overboard. That isn't Giant. Everything he does is overboard. When he falls, he's going to be an overprotective son of a bitch. It's in his blood.

His grin widens.

"I'm serious, Cormac," I growl. "I will kill you."

"Damn, brother," he says, laughing loudly. "Make a motherfucker feel special, why don't you?"

I shake my head at him. "Is there a reason you're in my office bugging me?"

"Uh, yeah." He makes a show of looking around my office. "Your office is a helluva lot nicer than mine."

He's full of shit. I mean, yeah, my office is nice. Three walls are all glass, looking out over Silver Spoon Falls and the harbor. The late afternoon sun spills through the windows, glinting off the hardwood floor. Despite the paperwork stacked everywhere, there's enough space in here to keep it from being cramped or cluttered. It's relaxing, peaceful.

But his office isn't anything to sneeze at either. It's state of the art, with security features most people only dream about. But Giant wasn't made to sit behind a desk. It drives him up the fucking wall. I'm pretty sure the man has ADHD. He never stays in one place for long, is always doing fifteen things at once, and couldn't sit still if his life depended on it. The only time he's ever chill is when he's on the back of his bike.

"I'm bored out of my fucking mind," he says right on cue, picking up a paperweight from my desk and tossing it into the air. "So I was thinking."

"Lord help us all," I mutter drily.

"Man, fuck you," he says, laughing. "You wish you had this brain."

"I wouldn't wish that brain on anyone."

He stops tossing the paperweight to flip me off. "Whatever. My brain is sexy, and you know it. But my fucking point was that I'm not doing anything and you're not doing anything."

I spread my hands out to indicate my desk and the stack of shit I'm very clearly doing.

He ignores me, of course. "So we might as well go do some recon."

Well, now he has my interest. "What kind of recon?"

"The kind that involves finding out what the fuck the Vipers are doing," he says. "Don't tell me you aren't curious as a motherfucker why they haven't made a move since Kyra. They're up to something. I feel it in my gut."
