Maybe I should have been more worried about the fact that he was, it seemed, missing. Anyone else would be. The thing was, even if Daemon got himself into some sort of fucked up situation, there wasn’t much to worry about. He couldn’t be killed. If he was getting his ass kicked, well, he probably deserved it.

Once everyone saw that they really couldn’t kill him, they would let him go.

He would show up eventually.

The only reason I was itching to talk to him was to ask about the whole Change shit.

Until then, I had to just assume it was a random thing that I needed to learn how to control.

I wasn’t naive. It wouldn’t be easy. It was like a human trying to stop breathing or sneezing. It was an uncontrollable impulse.

But I wasn’t exactly a young demon. I could fight it. Clearly, all the other demons in the club had learned to do so, since they all fucked around like jackrabbits before they found their women.

No way were they doing that with their talons and horns and wings out.

I guess I just had to know it was a possibility, so I knew to control it.

I probably should have been saying that it wasn’t going to happen again, that I didn’t want to muddy the lines between us any more than they already were.

But, yeah, I’d be fucking lying to myself, so what was the point?

I’d gotten a taste of something I knew I was going to want a lot more of.

You know… until I went back to the house and my old life and forgot all about it.

I was just going to ignore that niggling little voice in my head that was telling me that there was never going to be enough, that I was never going to be able to walk away.

Because that shit was insane.

Not actually needing any rest, I made my way back to my hotel to grab my bike, then went a town or two over to hit a store.

I hadn’t gotten enough clothing for this long of a job, having grossly underestimated how long it was going to take. And humans, well, they picked up on shit like not changing your clothes.

It was as I was walking past the electronics section that I caught the news again.

Seventy-five dead after a building collapse caused by a category seven earthquake in…

It really didn’t matter where it was taking place, because there was no way it was just another example of global warming.

That was, what, seven incidents?

And that was only the shit I knew about, the shit that was big enough and fatal enough to make the news. I bet if I sat my ass down and did some more research, that I would find dozens of other suspicious incidents that could possibly be traced back to the old gods waking up and flexing their muscles.

“Fuck,” I hissed, moving past the electronics.

Then there were the books.

One in particular caught my attention because it was one I had back in my hotel room. One that got me so hot I went and tracked down Charlotte to do something about it.

Apparently, it had a brand-new sequel.

I didn’t understand the urge to reach out and grab two of them, but I didn’t fight it either.

By the time I walked out, I had four new outfits, two smutty books, and a big box of condoms that I was still wondering if it would be enough since I was pretty sure I was going to spend the whole night fucking the woman instead of picking her brain apart about the old gods.

Not having agreed to a time, I showed up at her door a little earlier than our usual meet-up time.

“I’m coming!” she called through the door, and I couldn’t stop the smirk as it tugged at my lips.

Oh, she’d be coming, aright.

As many times as I could get her to.

“Sorry, I was finishing a paragraph,” she admitted with a sheepish smile as she opened the door for me. “It was the last paragraph of the book,” she added, as if I needed an explanation. Like I fucking cared about waiting in the hall for five minutes.

Humans.

They worried about the most idiotic shit.

“Well, if you finished that one, maybe you have time for this one,” I said, reaching in the bag to pull out the book I’d snagged for her.

“You… you got me a book?” she asked, looking up at me with these huge, round eyes. I wasn’t great at reading human facial expressions, but that looked like complete and utter shock to me.

But that weird, wet look to her eyes?

That I didn’t get.

“I saw that the other one had a sequel, so I picked us each up a copy.”

“You got a copy too?” she asked, and her eyes looked like they were almost, I don’t know, swimming.
