I’m sure he won’t bother to clean that up.

“Hey.” He turns to me after he spits and smiles like I’m some sucker he can easily scam. “You got any cash on you? Spot me a few twenties. I’m good for it.”

I stare at him until he starts laughing, this sick sinister sound, then I leave him standing there.

Out in the hallway, I pull the string of the attic door and unfold the stairs. I climb halfway up, reaching the boxes I stuck up here six months ago, and dig around for some clothes.

I step into the bedroom again and toss them at his face. “There. You need to chuck those sheets. Or take them out back and burn them.”

“Sorry, kid. Not my problem,” he sneers. “It’s your bed. You clean it up. I’ll be sleeping across the hall tonight. Considering that’s where you moved your mother’s bed. God rest her soul.”

“Like hell you are.” I hold the shirt against my face when it begins to slip. “You’re not staying in that room, Dad.”

“Yeah, Felix. I think I am.”

“Sleep in my old room. Or on the couch.”

“No.”

Clutching the clothes against his chest, he moves toward me, knocking so hard into my shoulder on his way out of the room, I stumble sideways and have to bite my lip to keep from groaning.

“Start that laundry for me, will ya?” he yells.

The bedroom door across the hall slams behind him, and the bastard locks it. The audible click causing my hands to fist.

“Fuck!” I shout.

I stalk out of the room and gather up every single cleaning product I own.

I am fucking pissed.

I make a hazmat suit out of black garbage bags, put on two sets of rubber gloves, and shield my eyes from vile backsplash with a pair of goggles I think I used for some middle school science experiment.

I haven’t hated my life this much in a long time.

I strip the bed and scrub the mattress, spraying it with disinfectant. The sheets get tossed, along with the clothes left on the bathroom floor.

Fuck him. I’m not doing his laundry.

I clean the floor where he stepped, scrub the shower, rinse, and then scrub it again, the bottom of the tub coated in the rankest dirt and excrement, so gross I have to stop twice to dry heave in the toilet.

There’s not enough bleach invented to make me want to take a shower in this bathroom anytime soon, but I think I get it sanitized enough.

It takes me three hours to clean everything, and I sweat my ass off in that suit.

And dear old dad?

He doesn’t show his face again, and when I hear him sawing logs like he’s getting the most restful sleep he’s ever gotten, I have to actively convince myself not to break down the door and pick a fight with him.

The last time we got into it, he dislocated my jaw, and I found out just how fucking good Percocets are.

Even though I think we’re evenly matched now, I can’t risk it.

After scrubbing myself raw in the hallway bath, I open every window upstairs I can get to. I need to air out the stench. Then I find some old sheets for my childhood bed and make that up for tonight.

I’m going to hang off and probably sleep for shit, but I can’t stay in my room yet.

But the smell still lingers all over the second floor at nine o’clock, so I stalk out of my old room, grab a spare pillow and a blanket out of the closet, and pad downstairs to the couch.

I turn the lights off and collapse on my back, wearing nothing but a pair of basketball shorts.

I’m still overheated from that garbage bag, and the leather cushions chill my back and legs. I keep the blanket bunched up underneath my heels for now.

Bella struts across the back of the couch, her eyes glowing in the dark.

“Come on,” I whisper, patting my chest just like Jake did. “Be nice to me tonight.”

She shows me her ass and leaps onto the windowsill.

“Bitch,” I mumble.

I roll over onto my side and open up my text messages.
