“This the bitch that talked to the cops?” growls one of them, a tall brute of a man with long hair and a thick beard. He looks and sounds like his day job should be the lead singer of a heavy metal band.

“We don’t fucking know that yet. Don’t throw shit around before she even gets a fucking chance,” Tank snarls.

One of the others snorts. “We’re just calling it like we fucking see it. She’s got no loyalty to us. I don’t owe her a fucking thing.”

“Jesus, relax, Sledge.” Wraith holds up his hands. “We’re taking her to King now. He’ll decide what to do.”

“Nobody’s going to relax while Eagle-eye rots in a fucking cell,” the metal guy spits out.

“Eagle-eye’s been arrested?” I blurt out. Then why were they trying so hard to get me to point him out?

Sledge crosses the room, his hands balled into fists at his sides. “Like you didn’t fucking know that, bitch.”

Wraith moves in front of me, and Tank and Nitro shift to slightly behind on either side, walling me in with their tough, muscular bodies. “Sit your ass down. You want me to tell King you don’t trust his judgment? Nobody’s touching a hair on her goddamned head, got it?”

A big guy with a thick brown beard and a build that rivals Tank’s puts a hand on Sledge’s shoulder. “Come on, let’s get you a beer and rack up another round. Those boys did their job and now it’s time to let King do his, you got it? Trust me. I want some fucking answers too, but look at her. Does she fucking look like she’s been eating bonbons in a spa for the past couple days?”

I don’t know what’s worse, their anger, or the slightly pitying looks in the eyes of these angry, badass men who hated me on sight. I tug my sleeves down over my hands, making sure the marks are hidden, and then shift one foot on top of the other to warm up my toes a little. There’s nothing I can do about the dark circles I know are under my eyes, or the rat’s nest full of drywall dust my hair is right now.

Sledge shakes the guy’s hand off his shoulder. “I still don’t fucking like this, Bear.”

“None of us do,” Bear says. His expression is hard to read. He looks like the kind of man who would give great hugs, but also rip someone’s head off if they threatened anyone he loved. Honestly, a lot of these guys give off that vibe.

“C’mon, let’s get you out of here,” Nitro says softly.

I feel like a prisoner as they lead me past the crowd of unfriendly faces and out of the lounge room. We walk down a corridor with doors on both sides like a hotel, but instead of room numbers, there are name plates. Not a single one even resembles a normal name, it’s all biker stuff like Thunder and Lightning. From what I can see when we pass a stairwell, there are even more rooms upstairs. How many people live here? It looks like a lot.

“Eagle-eye is your club president, the guy I met at the bar, right?” My voice sounds tinny and unsure.

Tank grunts. “Yeah.”

“If that King person decides I got him arrested, what’s going to happen to me?”

“Did you?” Wraith asks softly.

“I… I don’t think so.”

“Look, there’s a lot of shit going down right now and your pretty little ass landed right in the middle of it, Kaylee,” Nitro says. “Nobody here knows what’s going to happen to anyone.”

We stop in front of a room labeled Cannon. Tank opens the door and gestures for me to enter. “Come on. There’s some people you’re going to need to talk to soon, but you can get cleaned up and rest here until we get called in.”

“Who’s Cannon? Won’t he mind?”

Nitro shakes his head. “Nah, he moved in with his old lady and nobody’s claimed his spot yet.”

The room is small and fairly basic. There’s room for a bed, a dresser, and a card table with a couple chairs. There are still small piles of things lying around, like socks in the corner and beer cans on the table. But there’s no blinking camera eye on the ceiling, and something inside me relaxes just a little in spite of all the evidence that I’m very much still in danger.

I sit down on the edge of the bed that has no sheets or blankets and draw a shuddering breath. There’s blood on my hand and I don’t even know where it’s from or whose it is.

Wraith crouches down, balancing on his toes and puts his hands on my knees. “You okay?”

“No. If okay was a place, I’d be aaaaaall the way on the other side of the country. I’m just a girl. I’m not cut out for any of this,” I answer honestly.
