“You think I don’t know my mistakes?” I snapped. “I’m fully aware of everything I did. I’m also aware I looked like a fool for trying to hang onto a woman who didn’t want me.”

He shrugged. “The heart wants what it wants.”

“If I’d grown a pair before when I realized what she was up to, she’d still be alive.”

“Doubtful. If it hadn’t been you, she’d have found someone else and likely had a more gruesome death. Most MC’s tend to make examples of people who betray them.”

“Why am I here, El Diablo?” I wanted this done so I could go back to my room and slash that fucking Santa costume to ribbons. Might make me feel better.

“I have a position for you in Black Reign.”

I shrugged. “Not news. I’m here. I do whatever you ask me to do. I’m a glorified errand boy tasked with being Kris fucking Kringle. Other than that, I’ve never complained.”

“Not exactly what I was talking about, but as long as you’re aware you still have to play Santa, I’ll call it a win. No. I want you to be Black Reign’s Enforcer. You’ll answer to Razor as Sergeant at Arms. You’ll enforce our rules and carry out any punishments necessary.”

“No.” I shook my head. “Not happening. I’m done with being an officer in any club.”

“You’ll do what I tell you to, Warlock. This is where you’re needed. It’s what I’m demanding of you.” Where before he looked relaxed, now El Diablo was hard and all business. This was the legend no one fucked with.

“I’ll think about it.” It was the best I could offer him. At least, until I could convince him I wasn’t the man for this fucking job.

“You have until tomorrow. Your residence here is dependent on your decision.”

“That all?” If the bastard thought that was going to sway my decision, he could fucking think again.

“Yes.” He dismissed me with a wave of his hand. Looked like I was packing. Because there was no way in hell I was getting deep into the workings of Black Reign. Being an officer of any kind would demand I be involved. Well, at least leaving meant I wouldn’t have to go to the fucking Christmas Party.

As I entered the common room, I heard a feminine voice. One I hadn’t heard in the clubhouse before. It was sweet and pure, wrapping around my insides and squeezing painfully. I remembered that sensation and didn’t welcome it. The difference was, this time, it was ten times stronger than it had been with Bev. I knew I needed to sprint as far away from that fucking voice as I could, but my eyes automatically scanned the room looking for the source. When I found her, I nearly fell to my knees, crawled over to her, and fucking begged her to be mine.

She looked to be about twenty (I hoped) with jet-black hair so curly it looked like she hadn’t brushed it in several months. At the roots where her natural color had grown out, it was a bright, flaming red. Looked like she’d tried to cover it up but was in need of a touch-up job. Her skin was pale with freckles everywhere. Short and slight of stature, she might have weighed ninety pounds. Soaking wet. On her face was one of the most gloriously beautiful smiles I’d ever seen in my lifetime. Her skin was sprinkled liberally with freckles I wanted to trace with my tongue. She wore cut-off jeans shorts that came above her knees and looked like they were at least two sizes too big, and a stained AC/DC T-shirt. How a woman so disheveled and odd-looking could be so appealing to me at first glance was a total fucking mystery. I liked my life orderly. My women sure of themselves. This girl was anything but. Chaos embodied. That’s what she was.

“I’m looking for Maximilian Wagner?” She spoke to the prospect at the bar who grinned at her. I frowned. If I hadn’t already been focused on her, I was now. No one ever called me by that name. Well, except my mother, but we hadn’t spoken in more than fifteen years. Her decision. Not mine.

“Not sure I know anyone here by that name, sweets.” Then he tilted his head. “Are you even old enough to be in here? How’d you get through the gate?”

“Well, I told that guy --” She hiked a thumb over her shoulder in the general direction of the front gate. “-- Who I was looking for. He made a call, then let me in.” She shrugged. “I assumed he got permission from someone because he was very adamant no one was to be here unless they were with a member or had special permission.” She held out a piece of paper in her hand to the prospect. “I got special permission.” The girl looked supremely satisfied. “And I’m twenty-two. Ish.”
