Ignoring his server, William continued to glower at Cole.

“I guess I can’t compete with a Burbank. My pockets aren’t deep enough, huh?”

Spencer concealed his scoff. It was always about fucking money with these guys. That was why it was so hard for them to find true love. Instead of being unprofessional, Spencer turned to Renzo and cupped his cheek, his designer stubble tickling his palm.

“You are doing a great job tonight. Let me know if you need anything.”

Spencer hurried and walked away before Mr. Klein could get irate. Spencer had no intention of starting a dick-measuring contest between the jewelry tycoon and the insecure lawyer.

Spencer gave the chef his platter order and was almost out of the kitchen when Sergio stopped him and hauled him toward a dark corner.

“What’s going on?” Spencer asked, confused.

“Look, um. I know I told you to make sure Mr. Burbank had a good time and left with a platinum membership.” Sergio clenched the back of his own neck, avoiding Spencer’s face. “But I may have been a bit too insistent about it. I’m sorry if I made you feel like you needed to do anything to make that happen.”

“Sergio—”

“No. I was inconsiderate, and I’m so sorry. I know why you don’t take many customers anymore, and I told you I respected that.”

“Sergio, please.”

Spencer put his arm on his boss’s shoulder. At almost six feet, Spencer towered over him, but Sergio’s ego was taller than a skyscraper.

“I know that you do. And trust me, I’m not doing anything I don’t want to, okay?”

“But. But I thought you—”

“Thought I was what? Celibate?” Spencer shook his head.

He left from the shadows and started toward the staff’s lounge. A few of his coworkers jumped to their feet and rushed toward him, each one eager and firing off a question.

“Spencer, what’s up with the new guy?”

“All I wanna know is if he’s married.”

“My customer can’t stop watching you two across the room. He said your man is Coleman Burbank the fuckin’ Sixth. Billionaire extraordinaire.”

Is that even a question? Spencer rubbed his temples.

“Are you gonna pass him off to one of us after he signs up for membership? If so, I’m calling dibs.” LaVar stuck his hand into the air.

“I’ll take him and the guy he came in with,” James piped in. He wasn’t even a server; his ass was the goddamn piano player.

What the fuck is happening?

“I wanna know why you’re getting so cozy all of a sudden?”

Spencer put his palms up to ward off any more questions since he wasn’t going to answer one anyway.

“Please stay focused on your clients, people. We still have a few hours left before the shift ends, meaning there’s a lot more liquor to sell.”

Spencer scoffed and lifted one brow in challenge. “If your customer’s eyes are on me and mine, then there’s something you’re not doing right.”

“Ouch,” Sergio snickered.

His coworkers nodded and went back to their duties. Spencer wasn’t upset that their nosy little inquiring minds would never get answers. Besides, he didn’t even know if he was going to drop the well-constructed brick wall over his heart and let in a little holiday cheer. Or continue to be the downer he always was.

What should I do, Mom and Dad? I really am tired of being alone.

Spencer shook off his uncertainty and left the back of the house, ready to conquer his fears, or at least try.

He’d almost cleared the hall when he overheard the same coworkers he’d just dismissed huddled in a tight group around the corner, cursing in hushed voices.

They thought they were quiet and no one was listening, but he’d heard every word.

God, Spencer wished he hadn’t heard that.

Cole

Cole didn’t know who the motherfucker was who grabbed Spencer’s arm, but it pissed him off. He could tell by the tension in Spencer’s shoulders and the firm set of his jaw that it wasn’t appreciated.

Cole glared hard at the bastard after Spencer disappeared behind a set of double doors. He held the eye contact until the prick submitted and turned his attention back to his own table.

That’s what you better do, shithead.

Cole wasn’t a person who liked to cause a scene, but his protective side was simmering close to the surface.

That meant it was time for him to get the hell out of there. This wasn’t his type of crowd anyway. He considered people who needed to be catered to in this manner were weak. He’d never been that kind of person.

Quiet and thoughtful, yes, but never weak.

If he wasn’t so intrigued with Spencer, he wouldn’t be signing up for a membership at all.

“I wasn’t gone too long, was I?” Spencer asked, settling beside him.

“Just long enough for me to miss you,” Cole flirted back, putting his arm around Spencer’s shoulders until he noticed the light sheen of moisture in Spencer’s red-rimmed eyes.
