“Just tell me to wait for you,” I whisper as I slide my nose along hers.

She strokes her fingers over my cheek as she hiccups a sob. “I can’t. I wouldn’t do that to you.”

“I would, though.”

“I know, which is why I won’t ask.”

I squeeze my eyes shut tighter and press my nose into hers. “I love you, Emery, and I think I always will.”

She touches her lips to mine instead of answering, and I think that hurts me even more. I pull away first and then back away, wiping my face and mouth. When I open my eyes, she has covered her mouth, her eyes glossy and so full of sorrow. I want to hate her, I want to be so mad that she has broken me, but I can’t. I get where she is coming from. Seeing our parents and siblings so in love and how they have all become one, I get it. She doesn’t want to lose her identity, who she is, but I wish she could realize I wouldn’t want that for her. That we can be two people in love and still stay individuals. Or maybe we can’t. I don’t know. Maybe we are too young.

With a shaky voice, I say, “Merry Christmas, Emery.”

Her eyes gut me, they are so sad, but still, she whispers, “Merry Christmas, Quinny.”

Unable to stand there any longer, I turn and leave, thinking there is nothing merry about this Christmas—or any to come.

Because Emery isn’t mine.

THE END
