Never had he wanted a child.

He didn’t understand these feelings. He wasn’t father material. His life was way too dangerous. Children complicated things. They came with a weakness, but he had no intention of hurting this little girl.

“Sleep well, Evelyn,” he said.

He left the bedroom, nodding at the guard.

When the staff changed, the guards were required to tell their replacement what was expected of them.

He would make sure all the guards knew there was no harm to be brought to the two new females who were staying with him.

Running a hand down his face, he made his way to his office. Collapsing into his chair, he stared across the room at the endless shelves of unread books. He wasn’t one for classics, but he owned plenty of first editions. Another title his father thought would be worth something.

He shook his head, not wanting to think of the man he’d long since killed.

Wolf hated his father, and the moment he had the power of the guards on his side, it had been an easy kill.

His father had built a lot of enemies over the years. His cruelty had known no bounds. Thinking about Evelyn and Rain, if it had been left to his father, death would have been a kindness for what he’d have done to them.

Of course, everyone feared him far more than his father. It was strange how people worked.

His father had shown his cruelty, whereas Wolf waited to let his own cruelty show. They both had different ways of doing things, but in the end, they got the job done.

Mitchell entered his study. “Sir, I have all the details for you.”

Rain tried the door as any self-respecting captive would.

Nothing.

She gritted her teeth as the temptation to fight back filled her.

Instead of attacking the door, she went to the food he’d left at the table. An assortment of fresh fruits and toast were waiting to be eaten. Starving herself seemed like the most logical plan.

The biggest problem was … she was starving and to fight this man, she would need her strength.

Picking up a slice of peach, she took a bite.

As she stared at the door, she tried to come up with a plan. Anything that would help her out of her current predicament, but her mind drew a blank. There was nothing she could do. Her glares would achieve nothing.

She finished off several pieces of fruit and picked up the toast, taking a bite. She hated the taste of butter and often ate her toast with some jam or apple butter, but never dairy butter.

After a second slice of toast, she dusted off her fingers and stood.

The room was … beautiful. No doubt about it.

This man was rich. Wealth didn’t bother her.

She took a deep breath, and rather than sit around doing nothing, she explored.

Opening one of the two doors that were inside her room, she found a closet and an en-suite, that was once again, beautiful. No razor blades or knives in sight.

She moved toward the window. The temptation to smash the glass was strong, but she didn’t know exactly what this man was capable of. He might make her sleep in this room, and if there was a storm, she wouldn’t be protected with a broken door.

“Do you know one of the many things I love about you?”

“No, I don’t.”

“You didn’t make stupid mistakes, until me.”

“Daniel, come on, don’t do this.”

“You made a stupid decision when you married me.”

Rain closed her eyes, counted to ten, and tried to stop the tears from falling. Those memories were way too painful. She couldn’t allow herself to even think of them. She blinked, opening her eyes and fluttering them as she fought to keep the tears in.

She had cried enough.

She promised him she wouldn’t let any more tears fall. Not for Evelyn.

With a hand on her stomach, she breathed in deep and thought of Evelyn. Of her baby’s smile. Of the sweetness of their little girl. Evelyn gave her strength. She could do anything so long as her baby girl was by her side.

Being a nanny to her little girl was … outrageous. She would do anything she had to do to keep Evelyn. Rain wasn’t a fool. The situation they were in was dire. Could she have sex with that man? He was good-looking and there was no denying her body certainly woke up at being close to him. She folded her arms across her chest, trying to hide the evidence of that arousal.

Back at that holding cell or room, or wherever the hell he held her, the way he’d pushed her up against the wall, she had been … aroused. Just thinking about it was enough to make her hate herself.

That man was a monster.

She and Evelyn were in danger, and she was getting aroused by their captor.
