“I liked it better when you were on the ground,” Nate cracked, kicking my shoulder.

I sprawled into the dirt again, and all hell broke loose.

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Kon

Back when I’d been fighting two or three nights a week, in the moments just before entering the cage, I would mentally retreat into a calm, quiet place inside of myself. It was how I’d centered my emotions so none of it was ever personal. The things I did were never about anything but the fight.

That wasn’t going to work tonight because this was very, very personal. Seeing Nate kick Lucy had nearly sent me into a rage, but Boone’s hand on my arm, reminding me of the guns these men had, kept me from losing my shit too soon. Because there was no doubt I was going to lose my shit.

There were only four of us since Lars and Wes both had pregnant wives at home and we weren’t willing to risk their lives too. However, Boone had refused to stay behind, and Rory met up with us after he and Wes left the bank. Having been a loner my entire life, I was beginning to realize just how good it was to have friends. Especially these men.

Sawyer had called the police just as we’d pulled up. He’d given them a brief synopsis of what had happened and told the person he spoke to he was going to try to reason with Nate. Then he’d given them the address and disconnected, leaving his phone in the truck. Hopefully, the name Sawyer Cain would alert someone’s attention, but either way, Wes already had his attorney on standby. Just in case one or all of us wound up in jail. Probably me, because I was going to hurt someone in the very near future, but I didn’t care.

I’d do whatever was necessary to rescue Lucy and take the fall if necessary, so my friends didn’t have to.

“Hey, Nate.” Sawyer took the lead, stepping out from behind a dumpster, hands in the air. It was risky for him to surprise them like that, but we’d all agreed it was the best way to distract everyone. If we rushed in together, and bullets started flying, people could die. Including Lucy, who was on the floor.

Nate and his men all swung around in surprise, guns drawn, and I practically held my breath. We’d arranged ourselves so Sawyer could provide the distraction and then, hopefully, we’d be able to disarm and subdue them before they realized what we were doing.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” Nate asked with a growl, narrowing his eyes.

“Your first mistake was taking my sister,” Sawyer responded in a calm, level voice. “Did you really think I’d sit back and let you hurt her? Or that I didn’t put a tracker on her as soon as she told me what was going on? You must think I’m some dumb jock.”

“Jesus fucking Christ.” Some douchebag with a mustache huffed out a breath. “Are you serious, Nate? What the hell did you do?”

“Shut your fucking mouth,” Nate hissed before turning back to Sawyer. “Technically, you kind of are a dumb jock because…” He motioned to his men. “There are a lot more of us than there are of you.”

“Your second mistake,” Sawyer continued, completely unamused, “was assuming I came alone.”

Nate laughed. “Fuck you, Sawyer. You think I don’t know when a man is bluffing? You and your pansy-ass athlete friends wouldn’t know a gun from a hockey stick. And your stupid, spoiled, nosy bitch of a sister should’ve been happy to get married and let me knock her up. Instead, she had to poke around in things that had nothing to do with her. Now you’re both going to die. But not until you tell me what you did with those papers.”

“Already with my attorney,” Sawyer said with a shrug. “Anything happens to either Lucy or me, and he goes straight to the cops. You’re going to jail, Nate. Your brother too.”

“You dumb motherfucker!” Mustache threw up his arms in frustration. “This was a half-assed operation run by a bunch of fucking—”

The man I’d figured out was Nate’s brother Eric turned and fired his gun, shooting Mustache in the chest. Mustache fell back with a thud, eyes and mouth still wide with surprise.

This was escalating faster than I’d anticipated, so we had to do something before anything else happened that we couldn’t control.

“Now!” I yelled.

All of us moved at once. I came out from behind the dumpster where I’d been hiding with a flying leap, taking out Nate and the guy next to him at the same time. I dug my elbow into Nate’s head while kicking the gun from the other guy’s hand. I couldn’t see what the others were doing, because someone had jumped on my back and smacked me in the head with the butt of a gun, but it would take more than that to take me down.
