I gave a nod. But I reached for my phone before the press could get to me.

Tyler: Where are you?

Rain: In my office. Just got here. Also, hi.

Tyler: You have an office?

Rain: Omg.

Tyler: I’ll find it. Give me a few. They want me to do press and then shower.

Tyler: Meester said everyone is going to Halbrechts tonight, coaching staff too. They’ll want to see you.

Rain: I know. I’ll come. I’m going to talk to Coach Hines now. Mal said they tried to fire me, but he stopped it.

Tyler: Coach did? He has that power?

Rain: No. (eye roll emoji) Mal did. He’s the owner. I’m assuming he has the majority share.

Tyler: That makes more sense. I’d be a terrible NHL team owner. I’d just fire everyone who wanted to fire you.

Rain: I don’t think that’s how it works but thank you.

Rain: I have things to say to you too.

Tyler: Press is coming. Be there SOON

The reporters came in. They were usually hand-picked by Kashvi so they weren’t too scandalous, but I knew tonight was going to be different.

The first asked, “Tyler, what are your thoughts on your team’s loss tonight? Do you have any regrets?”

I kept my face deadpan. “My thoughts are that we were a mess. Obviously. We didn’t win, so there are always regrets there, but we’ll move forward and keep our focus on the next game.”

General question. General answer.

The next one asked, “Speaking of the next game, what strategy might you have so you don’t get a repeat of tonight’s game?”

I almost laughed but kept the same deadpan expression instead. “Strategy will be to stay focused and to make sure we all play as a cohesive unit.”

The third had a gleam in her eye. “Given the recent media storm surrounding your team’s consultant and your personal relationship with her, are you worried about facing her brother?”

I liked this question, and I grinned, knowing it likely looked chilling. “I’ve never been worried about facing Daniel or Dane Connors on the ice. Wasn’t worried in high school and that’s not changed. In fact, I’m looking forward to facing Connors on the ice.”

She had a follow-up question. “Any words for Daniel Connors if he’s watching right now?”

“Yeah.” I looked right into her camera. “Fuck you, Daniel.”

The reporter’s eyes went wide, and I knew that would get bleeped out on certain streams, but I’d gotten my message across. I gave them all a smirk before standing to grab my items for the shower. “Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

When I came back from showering, half the guys were gone.

I checked my phone before dressing.

Nolan: We’re flying back in the morning. Want to meet up tonight?

Tyler: The team is going to Halbrechts down the block. I want to talk to Rain first. If she and I are okay, we’ll put in an appearance.

Nolan: Okay. Your sister’s hitting up my phone. I’ll mention Halbrechts to her.

Tyler: I’m going to shoot her a text too.

I switched threads and clicked on my sister’s name.

Tyler: Plans tonight? Team is going to Halbrechts. I mentioned it to Nolan. I’m sure he and some of the other guys will come out with us.

Skylar: He just texted me. The guys are coming. Eric is obsessed with Rain, so be thankful he only likes dick. Have you talked to her yet?

Tyler: I will in a minute. I think she’s still with Coach.

Skylar: Zoey brought a friend tonight. She’s going to go back and stay at her house so I can do Halbrechts. I think a night away from her mom will be good for her. But I think she has a crush on Paul.

Tyler: Not really liking Paul right now.

Skylar: Relax, big uncle. He was very respectful. He just has a pretty-boy face and looks like a jock. He might be a jock. I don’t know. We don’t talk about that stuff, but I know he’s gay. But also, she’s underage and Paul would never. I’d gut him if he even looked at her like that. (Not that he would.)

Skylar: Are you sure you want to come out with all of us? You won’t want to spend the evening with Rain?

Tyler: The guys need to see Rain. They’re worried about her too. She’s made a difference with a lot of them. I can’t guarantee we’ll stay long.

Skylar: That makes sense. I’m going to make sure Zoey and her friend get back. Her friend’s parents are nearby for dinner, so they’re picking the girls up. Once they’re off, we’ll go to Halbrechts. Do you need us to save booths? Tables?

Tyler: Meester said we’re in the back room.

Skylar: See you there. Love you, brother. Sorry you were such a loser tonight.

I grinned.

Tyler: Payback’s a bitch, little sister. Payback is a bitch. Just remember that.

Skylar: So not scared. Your pranks suck. CUL8R!

I let Nolan know about the back room and also shot a text to Meester to say I had other people coming. He could find out who when they showed up.
