Hide.

Pray.

Wait for my rescue…

Someone would find me, right? Someone would be looking for me? Haven? Her family? Maybe even Jace?

“Help!” I shouted, banging on the walls. “Somebody please help me!”

I ran as fast as I could through another vaguely lit hallway, only stopping to check the few doors that lined the walls to see if they were open. Trying the handles, I pounded my fists for some sort of miracle that one would open.

They were all locked, and I couldn’t help but contemplate if other women were in them.

Was I being trafficked? Sold to the highest bidder? Didn’t they usually pay more for a virgin?

Deacon… how I wish you were still with me.

“Help! PLEASE! SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!”

I heard the door to the room I was being held in kicked down. It echoed through the walls and into the core of my being. The sound of his shoes dragged on the wooden floors. He was coming for me, that much I knew was true. Terror set in again, and I took off running, looking back to make sure he wasn’t behind me, not paying attention to where I was going.

Frantically, I tried to catch my bearings while I looked around needing to find something I could use as a weapon.

Nothing.

Not one damn thing.

Instead, I hid under the clothed table with my back against the wall. My heart was hammering out of my chest. It was so loud I swear he could hear it. Placing my hand over my mouth, I concentrated on softly breathing through my nose like a masked man wasn’t chasing after me.

I watched through the slits of my eyes as his steps passed by my body, but at the last second, he abruptly turned and gripped my ankles, triggering me to scream and kick to no avail until he once again pinned me to the ground beneath him.

I tightly shut my eyes, moving my head side to side, refusing to look at him. In a hard, demanding grip, he grabbed my chin, making me face him. Because I was a defiant woman, it was in my nature and part of my DNA at this point. My eyes snapped open, and I impulsively spit in his face, landing right on his lips.

To my complete horror, he slowly licked his mouth from one end to the other, cocking his head to the side as if he was baiting me.

Jace’s warning from the night he carried me out of the bar crept through my brain.

“One day you’re going to find yourself in a lot of trouble if you don’t start changing your ways.”

He was right.

Fuck!

Unable to help myself, I spewed, “Why are you still wearing a mask? Huh? Why are you using a voice machine? You have the balls to kill my boyfriend and take me captive, but not the balls to show me who you really are? You know what that proves to me? You’re nothing but a fucking pussy!”

For good measure, I spit in his face again. Except this time, it landed right near his eye. I wasn’t expecting him to scoff out a chuckle, obviously amused with my outburst.

Still feeling feisty, I pushed more boundaries, adding, “People will look for me. As a matter of fact, my best friend’s brother is retired military and a fucking badass! He’ll find me, and when he does, he’ll fucking kill you!”

I don’t know why I used Jace as my hero. Maybe it was just hopeful thinking or perhaps it was just me being a blatant idiot.

He snidely grinned as he grabbed the edge of his ski mask.

I laid there on pins and needles, waiting for the inevitable. Once I saw him, there was no going back, I’d be an eyewitness if they found me.

But when would that be?

Despite the harsh outcome of seeing his face, it didn’t stop my desire to see who he was.

In one swift movement, he showed me the man behind the facade.

“Oh my God.”

I just never expected him to reveal…

Jace fucking Beckham was now the villain instead of my hero.

Eleven

Jace

Her bright-blue eyes widened as she lay there in disbelief.

I was the first to break the deafening silence between us, stating, “I’ll back off, but only if you promise not to fight me anymore.”

Completely in shock, she thought about it for a second before slowly nodding.

I released her wrists and then hesitantly started moving away with my hands out in front of me in a gesture of surrender. As soon as I was sitting on the balls of my boots, she tried to punch me in the face, but I caught it mid strike, which only further pissed her off. I couldn’t blame her. If anything, I was proud as fuck of the courage she held in such a life-and-death situation.

Cove was a lot stronger than I ever gave her credit for, and that was saying something, considering I thought she was already pretty brave for all the shit her parents put her through.
