“And the baby?” I need to know.

“The baby looks good. We did an ultrasound and blood work, and everything looks great.” He pats my shoulder as tears of relief pour down my cheeks. “We’ll keep her overnight just to make sure, but you should be able to take her home tomorrow.”

After thanking him, I message Rulie to see where he is. He texts back to let me know he talked to Gloria, and she told him to go to the clubhouse and tell my brothers what’s happening. A few minutes later, a nurse comes in to give me instructions up to the maternity floor. “Why is she there?” I wonder if something has changed.

“We put all expectant mothers on the maternity floor to keep an eye on them,” she reassures me. It only takes me a few minutes to find Hadley’s room, but it feels like forever. I push the door open and rush into the pink and blue room.

When I see my wife sitting up in the hospital bed, I’m able to take the first real breath I’ve drawn in since Rulie rushed into my office. “Are you okay?” I sit on the bed next to her and lift her soft hand to my lips.

Hadley smiles and brings my hand down to her slightly distended stomach. “We’re fine.” I groan and lean over to kiss her soft lips. For a few moments, I thought I might never get to do this again.

Pulling back, I lay my forehead against hers and ask. “What happened?”

“Some kid was texting and ran a stoplight.” Anger rushes through me. “He hit the back end of the car and spun me around.”

This could’ve been much worse. I run my hands gently over her curvy body, reassuring myself that she truly is okay. “I’m going to make sure that little fucker loses his license,” I growl.

“No.” My wife grabs my hand and forces me to look into her eyes. “You can’t.”

I would do just about anything for her, but I can’t let this go. “He has to pay for this,” I tell her.

“He’s young, and he made a bad choice. And we’re okay,” she reminds me.

I decide to change the subject since my wife has been through so much today, and I refuse to add additional stress on her. “We’ll talk about all of this later. Right now, I want you to rest and get better,” I insist.

The next afternoon, her obstetrician releases her home with strict instructions to take it easy for at least a week. That won’t be a problem. I plan to make sure she’s taken care of for the rest of my life.

Once she’s back on her feet, Hadley convinces me to go easy on the little asshole who caused the car accident. She reminds me that our children will be teenage drivers one day.

She takes a sip of her hot tea before telling me, “You’ll need all the good Karma you can get when our kids are older.” We just finished breakfast, and I’m about to head to work.

“So, you plan on having more than one baby?” I pat her little tummy and place a kiss on her nose. I wasn’t sure she would want to go through this again. Between the morning sickness and accident, this pregnancy hasn’t been easy on her.

“Well. I have something to tell you.” She bites her lip, and I wonder what she means. “It looks like I got the twin gene.” My vision dims as Hadley shrugs. After I drop onto a barstool, my wife fans me with a kitchen towel for a few minutes until the room stops spinning.

“Two?”

“Yep. You get a two for one.” She laughs.

“I fucking love you.” I pull her close and feel her soft, curvy body relax against mine.

“I love you, too.” She glances up and smiles.

“You’re going to keep me on my toes, aren’t you?”

“Count on it.”

Seven Months Later

As I stare down at my newborn son, my heart nearly bursts from my chest. I glance over at my stunning wife. Hadley nearly gave me a heart attack when she went into labor four weeks early, but my girl is tough. She handled twelve hours of labor followed by two hours of pushing like a champ. My stunning wife delivered our two healthy sons without complaint. Well, she did leave bruises on my hands from her tight grip, but I consider those war wounds.

“How are you still so beautiful after giving birth to two human beings less than an hour ago?”

Hadley runs her finger down our other son’s little nose and smiles at me. “Liar.” She laughs. “I haven’t showered in two days. My hair is a rat’s nest, and I feel like I’ve been run over by a semi.”

“And you’re more beautiful than ever,” I assure her.

Kyra walks in the door and starts her gagging sounds. “Don’t lie to her.” She smacks my shoulder. “Aww. He’s so handsome.” Tears fill her eyes as she stares down at my son. “Please tell me you changed your mind on names.”
