I moved to block the doorway so Carlo couldn’t make a run for it. I was too tired to chase him again. “He’s here.”

Carlo started pulling his pants up and frantically looking around. I was sure he was wondering if I’d shoot him if he tried to jump out the window. “What?” Grant yelled so loud I pulled the phone away from my ear.

“Your guy is here at my cabin.” Carlo shook his head, looking at me with pleading eyes.

“You said you weren’t in trouble.”

“I’m not. He’s no threat to me.”

Grant blew out a breath. “We’re on our way.”

I started to say I’d bring him to the house, but if he came here, Grant would be anxious to leave with Carlo. If I went to the main house, Grant might trap me and want all kinds of answers I didn’t intend to give.

Of course, if he was coming here, Rogue might be with him, and he would definitely want to stay. That wouldn’t be as bad, though. Rogue wouldn’t push as hard, and if I refused to talk, he wouldn’t be a baby about it.

“Where the hell am I?” Carlo asked when I ended the call.

“You don’t know?”

I know where I was supposed to be taken, but…”

“You’re there. My cabin is on ranch property.”

“Fuck me.”

I raised my brows.

“I’m mean, you’re welcome to go again if that will get you to tell them you made a mistake or lost me or something,”

“It wouldn’t.”

“Are you sure? I know you loved it.”

That was the truth. I’d loved it too much. I was afraid if I fucked him again I wouldn’t be the one in control. He was so perfectly responsive. I could get addicted to his ass and end up willing to do whatever he wanted. That’s how starved I was for attention.

I was going to have to go on starving. It hadn’t killed me yet.

“So this cabin—”

“Is at one of the far borders of the property. Grant will be coming to escort you back to the main house.”

“Where he’ll lock me up.”

“Where he’ll make sure you don’t do something stupid and wind up dead.”

“I don’t want to be a fucking prisoner.”

“You wouldn’t have to be if you weren’t a flight risk.” My voice was starting to sound off to me. I hadn’t spoken this much in a long time, not even with Rogue.

Carlo frowned. “Are you okay?”

“You’re the one who had the hell fucked out of you and is about to be dragged to a safehouse, but you’re asking me if I’m okay?”

“You just seemed… Never mind.”

I was glad he hadn’t finished that thought. I didn’t want to know what he thought of me.

“Could I at least take a shower?” Carlo asked.

I wasn’t going to deal with him trying to climb out the tiny bathroom window. “No. Grant will be here soon.”

“How the hell did I end up where I was supposed to be?”

I smiled. “GPS is shit out here.”

“No kidding.”

“Where did you think you were going?”

He shrugged.

“So you just took off?”

“Yeah. One of my guards stopped the car because he thought he was lost. I guess he wasn’t that lost after all. He and the other guard were arguing, and I bailed.”

“Where were you?”

“Some dirt road that was barely one lane wide.”

“Jesus, you thought you’d find your way to a town without anything to guide you.”

“Maybe I’m an expert tracker.”

“Bullshit, you’re a pampered city kid, and I can’t believe I didn’t notice that earlier.”

“I’m not a kid, and you were distracted.”

I was distracted now, letting my eyes roam over him in the light. How would his soft hands feel running over me?

I was never going to find out. I didn’t need him gaping at my scars.

I heard a truck approaching. Grant was almost there. “If you tell anyone about what happened here, I’ll make sure you regret it.”

He frowned. “What are you doing here anyway?”

“I’m renting this cabin and occasionally helping out with the safehouse clients.”

“You mean you could be my bodyguard?”

“No.”

Did he seriously still want more? I couldn’t believe he could even walk after what I’d done to him.

“So you’re not supposed to sleep with the clients or threaten to kill them or make illicit deals with them?”

I didn’t say anything.

“What do I get if I don’t tell?”

“Not having to watch your back.”

He studied me for a moment. “Who are you?”

“You really don’t want to know.”

Grant knocked on the door, and I prayed Carlo would take me seriously and not say anything.

“Grant won’t be happy if he knows what really happened, and he’ll take it out on you as much as on me.”

That had him looking nervous. I grabbed his arm and pulled him out into the living room before I answered the door. I looked him over one final time. Was it possible Grant wouldn’t realize we’d fucked? Probably not since Carlo looked like he was on his way home from a wild-as-hell hookup.
