“Don’t do that,” I say through clenched teeth; she just smiles at me and does it again.

“Everett, I’m coming; please don’t stop. Please. Please. Please,” she begs.

“I. Won’t. Ever. Stop,” I punctuate each word with a thrust of my hips. She screams my name, and I feel her come on my cock, which sets me off. I fill her with my seed and pull out of her slowly.

“Wow,” she says, giggling.

“My sentiments exactly.”

She stands up and turns the bed down, then crawls inside. I join her in the crisp, cool sheets.

“Is it always like that?” she asks, resting her cheek on my shoulder.

“I don’t know, but I don’t think so,” I say, kissing her forehead.

“Yeah, that sounds about right,” she says, yawning.

“Sleep,” I tell her. She starts drifting off.

For the first time in a long time, I feel content.

Chapter Four

RAINN

I am startled awake by something. When I look around the room, I see Everett sneaking away.

“Are you leaving?” I ask, feeling like I can’t breathe. He rushes back to my side.

“No, baby. I left my gun downstairs. I have to go and get it. I shouldn’t have left it there. I wonder what could have possibly distracted me?” he says, kissing me.

“Go get it. Then come back to me.”

“I’ll be right back,” he says

“I'll be right here,” I say. As soon as he walks downstairs, I get up and run into the bathroom. I take care of my business and run a brush through my hair. My eye is awful, already black, but nothing I can do about that right now. I am so tired, but something tells me we are going to be up all night.

I can sleep when I’m dead.

Finally, at damn near nine this morning, I fell asleep and stayed asleep until my alarm went off at four. I typically sleep late because of the hours I work. The club is open from eight at night to two-thirty in the morning. I’d sleep later, but I have a keg delivery at five tonight, and I have to be up to let them in.

When I woke up, Everett was gone, but he left a note on his pillow that said he’d stop by when his shift was over at eleven tonight. I can’t believe how much I miss him already. I am already counting down the hours until he gets here. It’s too early to dress for my shift, so I throw on some jeans and a t-shirt and head downstairs. In the kitchen, I pull the glasses out of the industrial dishwasher and start putting them away. Tony, our cook, left the kitchen in immaculate shape, as he always does, so I don’t have to do anything in there.

Back in the club's central area, I pull all the chairs down and unlock the front door. The door at the alley has been broken for some time. Grandpa swears someone is coming to fix it, but when?

I turn on the music to a low volume and finish getting things ready. The door opens, and Jorge, the delivery driver from the warehouse, comes in, wheeling a keg. This is from Gallucci Brothers Birra Company in Texas. The locals can’t get enough of the sensual brew. The India pale ale, Sultry Delusion, is a hit here. The name says it all, really.

“Here you go, Rainn. Sign please.” I take his pen and scribble my name on the line.

“Thanks, Jorge. You and Ginger should come by tonight. The DJ we got is from Ibiza. He’s gonna tear it up,” I say.

“Thanks. I’ll tell Ginger.”

“I’ll add you to the VIP list,” I tell him. Ginger and I went to high school together. She and Jorge have been together for five months. They met right here in the club while Jorge was delivering a keg, and Ginger was bringing me a pair of thigh-high boots to borrow because I broke a heel the night before. I couldn’t get into Philadelphia until that Sunday, so she was kind enough to bring me a pair. They got married after five days of knowing each other. I thought they were crazy, but I think I get it now. If Everett asked me, I’d say yes with no hesitation.

“Great, thanks,” he says, waving as he goes out the door.

The door opens again a few minutes later.

“Gran,” I say, pulling her into a big hug. “Missed you last night.”

“It couldn’t be helped. Grandpa says you had a big night. Your eye looks terrible.”

“Nothing a little makeup won’t fix when I get dressed for work.”

“Well, tell me all about your sheriff,” she says, sitting down at the nearest table. I join her.

“Well, his name is Everett, and he’s the most handsome man I’ve ever seen. I...uh… feel like I’ve known him my entire life. He makes me feel… well, he makes me feel,” I gush. Gran just smiles and nods.
